Deployment for VMware IntelliSnap

To set up your environment for IntelliSnap, install the Virtual Server Agent and the MediaAgent.

The Virtual Server Agent can be installed on one or more machines, so that those machines can serve as VSA proxies. A VSA proxy manages backup and restore operations for guest VMs in your environment, eliminating the need to install agents on guest VMs.

You can configure application-aware backups using the Virtual Server Agent to protect application data without installing guest agents on virtual machines.

For Nutanix VMware IntelliSnap backups:

• If performing container level hardware snapshots at the subclient level, use a Nutanix Snapshot as a Snap engine.

• If performing VM level hardware snapshots at the subclient level, use Nutanix VM Snap as an engine.

To transition from container level backups to VM level backups, follow these steps:

1. Make a backup copy of all snapshot jobs.

2. Age off snapshot jobs and delete the container level snapshots at the Filter level.

   Important

   If any of the datastores have VM(s) that are protected using the VM-Centric engine ‘Nutanix VM Snap’ when they were previously protected by the container level snapshot engine ‘Nutanix Snapshot’, then the container/datastores will have a protection domain protecting them. Before switching engines, clean the protection domains using the Nutanix command-line interface (nCLI) command to delete them:

   vstore unprotect name= storagecontainername

3. After you have completed the steps to transition snapshots, you must run a Full backup job.
