Getting Started (Virtual Server Protection for VMware)

Updated

The Getting Started tab enables you to configure storage and a VMware backup client quickly. After basic configuration, you can perform backups and restores as well as other management functions.

Configure Storage

Configure the storage location for virtual machine backup data.

  • Add New Storage

Click to add a disk library. In the Add Disk Library dialog box, enter the name and location for a disk library to store backups. You can use a local drive or folder; but you must ensure that there is sufficient free space to hold backups for all virtual machines.

Configure Backup Client

Add a client for the vCenter or ESX server and select virtual machines to back up. After doing that, you can perform a backup and then a restore.

  • Add New vCenter or ESX

Click to add a client to manage operations. For the client name, enter the vCenter or ESX server host name. Provide user credentials with administrator privileges sufficient to perform backup and restore operations.

  • Select VMs

Click to browse and select virtual machines to back up.

  • Backup

Click to initiate a backup. In the Backup Options for Subclient dialog box, you can accept the defaults and click OK. The default is to perform an immediate incremental backup; but a full backup is always performed for the first backup of each virtual machine.

  • Restore

Click to initiate a restore. You can choose to restore a full virtual machine or guest files and folders.

  • Schedule

(Optional) Create an schedule to run periodic backup jobs automatically.

Monitoring

You can get information about active and completed jobs, receive alerts for key events, and generate reports on protection operations.

  • Job Monitoring

Display the Job Controller tab to monitor active jobs. Right-click a job to see job control and viewing options.

  • Job History

Display the Data Protection Job History dialog box to view information about completed jobs. To view job results, right-click a job and select View Job Details. The Virtual Machine Status tab provides information about the virtual machines that were backed up. Double-click a virtual machine to see detailed information for that VM.

  • Alerts

    Configure alert notifications.

  • Reports

Generate reports for backups and restores.
