Modifying the Deduplication Properties for a Subclient

Updated

You can set up signature generation on the subclient for better performance.

The signature generation module generates signatures for each block. Signatures are generated by using SHA 512 (Secure Hash Algorithm) and are based on the size of the data. This combination eliminates the possibility of collisions, where two blocks hash to the same value. The signature generation module can be configured either on the client or the MediaAgent.

For multiple clients that use the same MediaAgent and the DDB, we recommend that the signature generation run on the client because it is both memory and resource intensive.

Signature generation occurs only if the subclient is associated with a storage policy that has deduplication enabled.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > agent > backupset.

  2. Right-click the appropriate subclient and then click Properties.

  3. In the Subclient Properties dialog box, click the Storage Device tab, and then click the Deduplication tab.

If a subclient is associated with a deduplicated storage policy, the Enable Deduplication check box is selected by default and the On Client option is selected to generate signatures on client.

  4. To enabled the signature generation on the MediaAgent, select On MediaAgent.

  5. Click OK.
