Recovering Messages from an Exchange Database Block-Level Backup

Applies to: Exchange 2010, Exchange 2013, Exchange 2016, DAG and stand-alone environments

After you perform a block-level backup of an Exchange database, you can recover individual messages.

Before You Begin

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client.

  2. Right-click Exchange Database, and then click All Tasks > List Recovery Points.

    The Recovery Points dialog box appears.

  3. In the row of the recovery point whose messages you want to restore, click Browse.

  4. In the Browse window, select the messages that you want to recover, and then click Recover All Selected.

    The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  5. To restore messages either to a mailbox or to a PST file, follow one of the following two procedures:

    • To restore messages to a mailbox, select Mailbox, and then type or browse to the destination path where you want to recover the selected messages.

      Note

      To restore messages to a different folder on the same client, clear the Restore to Same Folder check box.

    • To restore messages to a PST file, select To PST File, and then type or browse to the path where you want to recover the selected messages.

      Make sure to include the name of the PST file and the .pst extension.

      Optional: To limit a specific user to access the restored PST file, in the PST Owner box, type the SMTP address of their service account mailbox.

    • If you want to restore a large data set to multiple PST files, select the Limit PST size to (GB) check box, and then enter a size value.

      The size limit cannot be greater than 45 GB.

  6. Click OK.
