You can restore the database stores to a physically different location on disk (that is, a non-Exchange location), with a choice of whether to replay the transaction logs.
If you use Exchange 2007, the backup must be VSS-enabled. If you use Exchange 2010 or later, the backup is VSS-enabled by default.

Before You Begin

Make sure that the database that you want to restore is dismounted and marked for overwrite.

Make sure that the Storage Group or the Database name uses ASCII characters only and does not contain the plus (+) character.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client.

Right-click Exchange Database, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.
The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

Click View Content.

In the left pane of the Client Browse window, expand Exchange Database > Microsoft Information Store > Storage Group/Database.

In the right pane, select the database that you want to restore, and then click Recover Databases.
The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

From the Destination client list, select the appropriate client.

In the Restore Options area, select Out of place restore to file location.

Optional: If you do not want to replay the logs after the restore, select the Without Recovery check box.

In the list at the bottom of the dialog box, select the Source DB.

In the Destination DB/Out of Place Location column, click ...
The Client Browse dialog box appears.

Select the path to the destination location, and then click OK.

Click OK to close the Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box.

Manually mount the stores after the restore.
