Virtualizing a Linux Computer - Online Help

Virtualize Me

Use this wizard to convert the client computer into a virtual machine. It involves the following steps:

Select Recovery Points

This is the first step in the Virtualize Me wizard. In this step you can select the backup data which you want to use to create the virtual machine.

Backup Set

By default the data and client configuration backed by the default backup set is used to create the virtual machine.

If you want to use the data and configuration backed up by any other backup set, select the backup set from the list.

Recover from the latest backup and configuration

This option is selected by default. The latest backup data and client configuration is used to create the virtual machine. You can create the virtual machine using a backup performed at a specific point-in-time.

Select Point in Time

Select this option to specify the specific point-in-time. The backup performed at the specific point-in-time will be used to create the virtual machine.

You can specify the point-in-time as follows:

Restore Data Before:

Select a date and specify the time.

Time Zone

The default time zone of the CommServe is selected automatically. Select the appropriate time zone if you want to use the backup performed in a different time zone.

Next

Proceeds to the next step.

Virtual Machine Location
VMWare

Select the location of the virtual machine on the vCenter.

vCenter

Select the vCenter where you want to create the virtual machine.

Virtualization Client

Select the virtualization client for the selected vCenter.

ESX Server

Select an ESX Server on which you want to create the virtual machine.

Datastore

Specifies the datastore on the ESX Server.

ISO Path

Specifies the ISO from the datastore on the ESX server.

VM Name

Specifies the name of the virtual machine. By default, the client name is used as the name of the virtual machine.

Overwrite VM

Specifies to overwrite all the data and configuration of the existing virtual machine with the backup data and configuration of the client computer. Select this check box only if a virtual machine with the specified name already exists on the ESX server.

Expiration Date

Specifies the expiration date of the virtual machine. Clear the Never check box to select the date. After the expiration date, the virtual machine is powered off and decommissioned.

Next

Proceeds to the next step.

Advanced

Specify a resource pool and a VM folder within the selected resource pool where the virtual machine will be added.

Hyper-V

Select the location of the virtual machine on the Hyper-V Server.

Hyper-V Instance

Specifies the Hyper-V instance where you want to create the virtual machine.

Hyper-V Host

Specifies the Hyper-V host on which you want to create the virtual machine.

Storage

Specifies the storage on the Hyper-V host.

ISO Path

Specifies the ISO from the storage on the Hyper-V host.

If you select the Never check box, the virtual machine never expires and is not decommissioned.

Next

Proceeds to the next step.

Review Recovery Options

In this step you can change the client configuration.

General

Following options are available to modify the client configuration:

Host Name

Specifies the host name of the CommServe for the selected client.

Client Name

Specifies the name of the CommServe Client.

IP Address

Specifies the IP Address of the CommServe which is used to back up the client.

Client Group Name

Specifies the client group of the selected client.

Use the currently logged in user account

By default, the user account that you used to log on to the CommCell console is used to perform the virtualization job.

  • If you are using the Active Directory user account to log on to the CommCell console, enter the password for the user account.

  • If you have logged on as the CommCell console administrator, the password is not required to perform the virtualization job.

Use a different user account

Select this option if you want to use a different user account to perform the virtualization or restore job. Administrator can create a separate user account to perform this job.

Enter the credentials for the user account.

Ensure that the user account has the following permissions:

  • Administrative Management

  • Browse

  • End User Access

  • Out of Place Recover

  • In Place Recover

  • Installation

  • Agent Management

  • Overwrite on Restore

Configuration

Following options are available to modify the client configuration:

Number of CPUs

Specifies the number of CPUs. You can increase or decrease the number of CPUs.

Memory in (MB)

Specifies the memory in MB.

DNS Suffix

Specifies the DNS suffix. If you want to change the DNS suffix of the client, enter the new DNS suffix.

Network Configuration

Specifies a list of all network interfaces available on the client. Select the interface which you want to use for the virtual machine.

Add

Click to add a new network interface.

Edit

Click to change an existing network interface.

Delete

Click to remove a network interface.

Disk Configuration

Following options are available to modify the disk configuration of the client:

Automatic Disk Layout

Specifies to increase the disk size automatically when you increase the mount point size.

The Disk Configuration tab displays the following lists:

List of Mount Points

This is the list of mount points available on the client computer. The list has the following columns:

Mount Point

Specifies the mount points assigned to the disk or the physical volume.

Disk/PV Name

Specifies the name of the disk or the physical volume associated with the mount point.

MountPoint Size (in GB)

Specifies the mount point size. Double-click in the column to change the size of any mount point.

Selected

Specifies the selected mount points that will be added to the virtual machine. You can select only the system mount points, and then add the non-system mount points later.

List of Disks

This is the list of disks on the client computer. The list has the following columns:

Disk Names

Specifies the name of the disk. If you clear the check box for any disk, all the mount points on the disk will be removed from the virtual machine.

Disk Size (GB)

Specifies the size of the disk. Select or type to change the disk size.

Datastore

Specifies the name of the datastore where the disk will be created. Select a datastore where you want to create all the disks. By default, all the disks will be created in the default datastore.

Disk Provisioning

Specifies the disk provisioning for each disk. By default, thin provisioning will be used for disk space allocation for all disks.

Restore Options

Following options are available to restore the client configuration and data onto the virtual machine:

Copy Precedence

Specifies the copy precedence for the restore operation. If you want to use the client configuration and data available in a specific storage policy copy, enter the copy precedence number for the specific copy.

Advanced

If you are creating a replica of the client computer, the following options are available:

Clone Machine

Select this check box to create a replica of the client computer. The client computer can be a physical computer or a virtual machine.

The clone computer will be a virtual machine.

New Client Name

Specifies the client name for the clone computer. The clone computer will automatically become the client of the CommServe.

New Hostname

Specifies the host name for the clone computer.

Next

Click to go to the next step.

Save As Script

Click to open the Save As Scriptdialog, which allows you to save this operation and the selected options as a script file (in XML format). The script can later be executed from the Command Line Interface using qoperation execute command.

When you save an operation as a script, each option in the dialog will have a corresponding xml parameter in the script file. When executing the script, you can modify the value for any of these XML parameters as needed.
