Use Commvault software to back up and recover Epic EHR systems hosted on Amazon EC2 instances.
-
Perform the following steps inside the guest VM before performing a backup:
-
On the Configuration tab, in the Options section, click the edit button.
-
For Virtual machine backup type, select Application consistent.
-
Click Save.
-
-
Ask Epic for the scripts to freeze and thaw the databases.
Note
Epic typically sends these scripts with the initial software delivery of the installation package. The pre-script is called instfreeze and the post-script is called instthaw.
-
Copy the freeze and thaw scripts to the AWS SSM documents. The SSM document names must follow the
CV_SSM_*format. -
Add the following tags to the AWS instance:
-
cv-pre-snap-script: Name of the AWS SSM document that runs the freeze script. -
cv-post-snap-script: Name of the AWS SSM document that runs the thaw script.
Both tags must be applied for the pre- and post-scripts to run during a backup.

-
Configure IAM roles for the guest VMs and access node.
-
For each guest EC2 instance, attach an IAM role (for example,
AWSSSM_role) with the following policies:-
AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore managed policy
-
-
Configure the access node's IAM role with all permissions required to run the scripts during backups. For the required permissions, see the amazon_restricted_role_permissions.json file.

Perform a restore operation.
