Configuring Cloud Storage

You can configure a new cloud storage in the Command Center. You can configure the cloud service provider, storage class, region, authentication, and MediaAgent settings.

The number of partitions created is determined by the number of DDB MediaAgents selected during configuration:

  • 1 MediaAgent selected

    • Two partitions are created on the single MediaAgent.
  • 2 MediaAgents selected

    • Two partitions are created on each MediaAgent, for a total of four partitions.
  • 3 to 6 MediaAgents selected

    • A total of six partitions are created and distributed evenly across the selected MediaAgents.
  • More than 6 MediaAgents selected

    • The first six MediaAgents are used to create the six partitions.

    • The remaining MediaAgents are assigned the Deduplication Database (DDB) role only.

The software automatically assigns the deduplication database (DDB) path on the MediaAgent without requiring user input.

Guidance for Configuring Archive Storage Tiers for Buckets and Containers

You can create a bucket or container that is configured by default for either the hot or warm storage tier.

Based on your Commvault plan configuration for long-term data retention, you can write backup data directly to specific archive storage classes, including:

  • Amazon S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval
  • Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval
  • Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive
  • Azure Blob Storage – Cool Tier
  • Azure Blob Storage – Archive Tier

During storage configuration, select the appropriate storage tier according to your retention requirements. The bucket or container name remains the same as the one used for the hot or warm tier.

Commvault writes metadata to the cold tier within the configured bucket or container, while backup data is written directly to the selected archive tier (e.g., S3 Glacier) within the same bucket.

Use the following procedure to configure cloud storage.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, click Storage > Cloud.

    The Cloud page appears.

  2. In the upper right of the page, click Add to add a cloud storage.

The Add cloud storage page appears.

  3. From the Type list, select the cloud service provider.

  4. In the Name box, enter a unique name for the cloud storage.

  5. From the Storage Class list, select the appropriate storage class.

  6. From the Region list, select the region where the storage account is located.

  7. In the Service Host box, type the name of the cloud server host.

For some cloud service providers, the Service Host box is populated with the default value for that cloud service provider.

  8. From the MediaAgent list, select the MediaAgent that will access the cloud storage.

    • Click the + button to add a new MediaAgent if needed.

    • If you selected a region that has an associated storage resource pool, the MediaAgent field is automatically populated with the Automatic option selected by default.

    • The Automatic option dynamically assigns MediaAgents from the storage resource pool defined for the selected region.

    • You can override the default behavior by manually selecting one or more MediaAgents from the list.

  9. From the Authentication list, select the authentication method.

  10. In the Account Name box, enter the name of the cloud storage account.

  11. From the Credentials list, select a pre-defined credential.

Optionally, click the + sign to create a new credential to access the cloud library.

For more information, see Adding Credentials to a Cloud Library.

  12. In the Container or Bucket field (appears based on the cloud vendor selected), enter the container or bucket name where backup data will be stored.

    • Click Detect to verify that the container exists.
  13. Verify that the Use Deduplication toggle is enabled to use deduplication for data stored in the storage.

  14. From the DDB MediaAgent list, select one or more MediaAgents to use for deduplication.

    • If you selected a region that has an associated storage resource pool, the DDB MediaAgent field is automatically populated with the Automatic option selected by default.

    • The Automatic option dynamically assigns MediaAgents from the storage resource pool defined for the selected region.

    • You can override the default behavior by manually selecting one or more MediaAgents from the list.

  15. Click Save.
