You can enable backup for Project Online sites from the Microsoft 365 plan page. To ensure successful backups of Project Web App (PWA) sites, the service account used must meet the following requirements:
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) must be disabled for the service account.
- The account must not be affected by Conditional Access (CA) policies that could block access.
- Legacy authentication must be enabled at the tenant level.
- The service account must not be subject to MFA enforcement, either directly or via security defaults.

As of October 15, 2024 Microsoft made changes to MFA affecting Project Online backups. Please refer to KB article 84686.
Procedure

From the navigation pane, go to Manage > Plans.
The Plans page appears.

On the Office 365 tab, in the Plan name column, click a plan for which you want to enable backup for Project Online sites.
The Office 365 plan page appears.

In the SharePoint pane, move the Backup Project Online toggle key to the right.
