Hardware Requirements for Linux CommServe Bare Metal

This document outlines the supported hardware options for CommServe deployments. It includes approved hardware vendors and detailed requirements for CPU, memory, storage, and validated HBAs.

When CommServe is deployed on validated hardware:

  • Commvault is responsible for the software image, including the operating system and Commvault software.

  • Customers are responsible for all hardware-related tasks, including initial storage configuration, troubleshooting, component replacement, firmware, and BIOS updates.

Each CommServe system must have hardware support that matches the duration of the software support.

Because the CommServe design is highly flexible, it is not possible for Commvault to validate every hardware permutation, option, or capacity. Only the components explicitly listed in this document have been validated through extensive testing and are supported by Commvault’s Linux 8 distribution.

Use Case: Core backup and recovery

Approved Platform Vendors

Only the vendors listed below are approved for CommServe deployments:

  • HPE

Certified Hardware Models

HPE DL380 Gen 10 or later

CPU Core Requirements

CommCell Size Minimum CPU Cores Notes
Large CommCell 12 or more cores (regardless of socket count) Supports up to 2500 servers, 5000 virtual machines, or 10,000 laptops in a single CommCell. Minimum: Intel Xeon 3rd Gen Silver
Extra Large CommCell 16 or more cores (regardless of socket count) Supports up to 2500 servers, 5000 virtual machines, or 10,000 laptops in a single CommCell. Minimum: Intel Xeon 3rd Gen Silver

Memory Requirements

CommCell Size Minimum RAM
Large CommCell 64 GB
Extra Large CommCell 128 GB

Boot Device Requirements

  • A dedicated boot device with a hardware RAID 1 configuration is required.
  • Use 2 x SSD or NVMe devices (minimum 240 GB each).
  • Software RAID solutions (e.g., Intel VROC) are not supported.
  • Boot Device Requirement is 2 x 240 GB (or larger)

RAID Controller Requirements

Only the following RAID controllers are supported. Unlisted cards are not supported.

  • HPE Smart Array P816i
  • HPE Smart Array P408i
  • HPE Smart Array E208i
  • HPE Broadcom MR216i
  • HPE Broadcom MR416i

CommServe Application Storage Requirements

  • A dedicated, redundant flash device is required for database and application storage.
  • SAS or NVMe devices are recommended in RAID 1 or higher.
  • Application storage must not be hosted on the boot device.
  • Drive capacities listed below are in terabytes (TB) before formatting.
Storage Pool Capacity Minimum Disk Size
Large CommCell 2 x 1.2 TB (RAID 1)
Extra Large CommCell 2 x 1.6 TB (RAID 1) or 2 x 960 GB (RAID 1)

CommServe Network Requirements

A minimum of one 1 Gbps network connection is required for deployment. Additional high-speed connections are supported to enhance performance. Only network cards listed in the Commvault Certified Network Card below are supported, and any cards not included in the list are not supported.

  • Broadcom 57414 Dual Port 10/25Gb SFP+ or SFP28

  • Mellanox MCX512A-ACAT ConnectX-5 EN 10/25Gb
  • Mellanox MCX6314 ConnectX-6 10/25Gb

Additional Considerations

Because customer environments vary, certain components are not included in the default design and must be ordered separately to ensure complete functionality and connectivity. These components include Fibre Channel (FC) and Ethernet transceivers, Ethernet cables, Fibre Channel cables, and power cables.
