A full scan operation identifies the slot location and barcode or media identifier of every media detected within the library. The software uses this information to prepare the list of new media from which media can be discovered for the CommCell and the information on the location of known media.
Note
A full scan operation finds only the media that are contained within a library.
A full scan operation takes a few minutes for completion depending on the settings in the individual library. The software performs a full scan in the following cases:
- You open and close the library door.
- You turn on the power of the library.
- You request a reset library operation, although not all libraries invoke the full scan command on a reset library command.
- You request an import or export media operation. In this case, update operation is initiated and full operation is not initiated.
- When you perform the full scan operation from Command Center.
In addition, several library models automatically perform a full scan operation in the following cases:
- You install and configure the library for the first time.
- You restart the Media Manager service of the library in the CommServe.
- You restart the MediaAgent service.
When a full scan is in progress, the library status appears as offline until the operation completes successfully. Any new data protection operation or data recovery operations that access the library cannot start until the full scan operation completes.
A full scan operation does not affect media that are already mounted in drives. A data protection operation or data recovery operation that is in progress when the full scan is initiated can continue if it does not need to access unmounted media. However, some library models may force the drive to unload resulting in the data protection operation or data recovery operation using the drive to fail. The software logs appropriate message to indicate the offline and online status of the library during a full scan operation.
