Prepare your Incus environment for protection

Prepare a Linux access node with the components required for Incus backup and restore operations before you configure the Incus hypervisor.

For supported Incus versions, virtual machine types, storage pools, and storage volume content types, see Support.

Access node requirements

Incus backup and restore operations require a Linux access node. Windows access nodes are not supported for Incus protection.

You can use a preconfigured FREL access node image or prepare another supported Linux access node.

  • FREL access node image: Use the custom Linux access node image (FREL), which is preconfigured with the components required for Incus data protection operations.

  • Other Linux access nodes: Install the following components:

  • The packages for your Linux distribution that provide the qemu-nbd and nbdinfo utilities

  • The required Commvault software

  • Configure cvnetworkbridge to run as a service.

Configure cvnetworkbridge

Configure cvnetworkbridge as a service when you use a Linux access node that is not created from the preconfigured FREL access node image.

Requirements

Before you configure the service, install the following components on the access node:

  • The required Commvault software

  • The packages for your Linux distribution that provide the qemu-nbd and nbdinfo utilities

Configure the service

  1. Run the following command to identify the Commvault home directory:

    commvault status

    Note the value for the Commvault Home Directory. The directory is typically /opt/commvault/Base.

  2. Create the /etc/systemd/system/cvnetworkbridge.service unit file.

  3. Add the following configuration to the unit file. Replace $[commvault_home_dir] with the Commvault home directory that you identified in the previous step.

    [Unit]
    Description=CVNetworkBridge daemon
    After=network.target
    Wants=network.target

    [Service]
    Type=simple
    ExecStart=$[commvault_home_dir]/cvnetworkbridge
    RuntimeDirectory=cvnetworkbridge
    RuntimeDirectoryMode=0700
    Restart=on-failure
    RestartSec=5s

    # Send SIGTERM on stop; the daemon drains sessions before exiting.
    KillSignal=SIGTERM
    TimeoutStopSec=40

    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target

  4. Reload the systemd configuration:

    sudo systemctl daemon-reload

  5. Enable cvnetworkbridge to start automatically and start the service:

    sudo systemctl enable --now cvnetworkbridge

  6. Verify that the cvnetworkbridge service is running:

    sudo systemctl status cvnetworkbridge
