The server name is registered on the client's operating system and uniquely identifies the client in the CommCell environment. During a backup or other operation, the software looks up and uses the server name.
Changing a Server Name on the Client Operating System
When you change the server name on the server's operating system, you must also notify the components in the CommCell environment about the change. Additionally, you might need to change the host names of the CommServe, MediaAgent, and servers in one or more of the following scenarios:

When you move the CommServe or change the hardware to provide a better configuration.

When you move the CommCell and the servers to another CommServe.

When you change the domain name associated with the CommCell.

When you move a server or change the hardware to provide a better configuration.
Note
You cannot change the server names of the CommServe, MediaAgent, and servers using the CommCell Console and Command Center.
