Sizing Guidelines for Commvault Grid

Use these guidelines to select the node type and number of nodes required for each location based on the required back-end capacity.

Plan the deployment

To size your Commvault Grid environment:

  1. Estimate the required back-end capacity for each location.

  2. Select the deployment model: Appliance or Reference Architecture.

  3. Select the node type: N4, N12, or N24.

  4. Use the capacity table to determine the number of nodes required for the estimated capacity.

Each node is fully populated with hard disk drives (HDDs) and includes sufficient compute resources to meet or exceed performance and resiliency requirements. The modular architecture lets you scale capacity and performance by adding nodes as data grows.

Storage pool requirements

Review the following requirements when you size a storage pool:

  • Initial storage pool creation requires a minimum of three similarly configured Commvault Grid Reference Architecture nodes. This three-node configuration is referred to as a block.

  • After you create the storage pool, you can expand it by adding one or more nodes.

  • Commvault Grid Reference Architecture nodes must be fully populated with drives. Servers with fewer than the required number of drives aren't supported.

    Node type Required HDD configuration
    N4 4 × LFF HDDs
    N12 12 × LFF HDDs
    N24 24 × LFF HDDs
  • Appliances are sold based on usable back-end capacity.

For the drive capacities supported by specific Appliance or Reference Architecture systems, see the applicable technical specifications.

Capacity guidelines

Use the following capacity values for planning. The initial block capacity represents a three-node configuration. The individual node capacity can be used when planning storage pool expansion.

Node type Drive size Drives per node Initial block capacity (TiB) Individual node capacity (TiB)
N4 4 4 25 8
N4 8 4 50 17
N4 12 4 74 25
N4 14 4 88 29
N4 20 4 124 41
N12 8 12 151 50
N12 10 12 189 63
N12 12 12 226 75
N12 14 12 264 88
N12 16 12 300 100
N12 18 12 339 113
N12 20 12 372 124
N24 8 24 302 101
N24 10 24 377 126
N24 12 24 453 151
N24 14 24 528 176
N24 16 24 604 201
N24 18 24 678 226
N24 20 24 745 248

Note

The Initial block capacity values are based on the minimum configuration of three similarly configured Commvault Grid Reference Architecture nodes.

The Individual node capacity values apply when you expand an existing storage pool by adding one or more nodes.
