Updating a VMware Cloud Director Hypervisor

You can update settings for a VMware Cloud Director hypervisor.

Requirements

Go to the Hypervisor

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click the hypervisor.

    The hypervisor page appears.

Modify the Hypervisor Credentials

  1. On the Overview tab, in the General section, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

The Edit hypervisor details dialog box appears.

  2. Specify the following:

    • Host name: Enter the vCloud host name.

    • For Credential, select existing credentials or create new credentials.

      Steps to create credentials
      1. Click the add button add/plus button - gray - no border.

The Add credential dialog box appears.

      2. For Credential Vault, select the credential vault to save the credentials in.

      3. In Credential name, enter a descriptive name for the credentials.

      4. In User account, enter the name of the user account that has permissions to do the following:

        • Access the vCloud and virtual machines—as well as the volumes, files, and folders within virtual machines

        • Obtain the account credentials or get access to saved credentials

        • Perform discovery, backup, and restore operations

      5. In Password, enter the password for the user account.

Verify that the vCloud password for the hypervisor does not contain any of the following special characters or any non-ASCII characters: ampersand (&), semicolon (;), double quotation mark ("), single quotation mark ('), caret (^), backslash (\), percentage sign (%), left angle bracket (<), right angle bracket (>).

      6. In Description, enter a description of the credentials.

      7. Click Save.

      Note

Commvault uses simple authentication method to establish connection with the vCloud hypervisor. The user account name and password that you specify are passed directly to the vCloud hypervisor for validation.

View Recovery Points

On the Overview tab, the Recovery points section shows the backups that are available by date. For information about restores, see Restores for VMware Cloud Director.

Disable Backups

When you disable backups, the hypervisor is excluded from SLA calculations.

  1. On Configuration tab, in the Activity Control section, move the Data backup toggle key to the left.

The Data backup dialog box appears.

  2. Click Yes.

Disable Restores

If you disable restores, applications and other data cannot be restored.

  1. On Configuration tab, in the Activity Control section, move the Data restore toggle key to the left.

An Enable after a delay link appears.

  2. To enable restores again after a delay, click the Enable after a delay link, and then enter the amount of time to delay.

Modify Tags

If you have the Tag Management permission, you can create and apply tags to the hypervisor. For more information, see Entity Tags.

  1. On Configuration tab, in the Tags section, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

The Manage tags dialog box appears.

  2. In Tag name, enter a name for the tag.

  3. To assign a value, in Tag value, enter the value.

  4. Click Save.

Specify a Preferred Access Node for Guest File Restores

When you browse files from a backup of a Linux VMware VM, by default, the Commvault software automatically selects the access node to mount the files. To override the default behavior for this hypervisor and specify an access node to mount the files, use the Node for guest file restores of Linux VM setting.

  1. On Configuration tab, in the Options section, for Node for guest file restores of Linux VM, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

The Edit file recovery node dialog box appears.

  2. Select the access node.

  3. Click Save.

Specify Guest Credentials

For application-aware backups, you can specify the credentials that are used to access guest VMs.

  1. On Configuration tab, in the Options section, for Guest credentials, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

The Set guest credentials dialog box appears.

  2. Enter a user name and password that can be used for all guest VMs that are associated with the hypervisor.

  3. Click Save.

Specify a Time Zone

The default time zone for the hypervisor is the time zone of the CommServe server. You can specify a different time zone for the hypervisor.

If you specify a time zone for the hypervisor and for a VM group, the Commvault uses the time zone of the VM group.

  • On Configuration tab, in the Options section, for Time zone, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil, and then select the time zone.

Block Cross-Region Backups

The most cost-effective way to protect VMware Cloud Director VMs that reside in multiple regions is to create a multi-region backup plan, assign the backup plan to your VM groups, and then block cross-region backups for your hypervisors (by enabling the Restrict cross-region backups toggle key).

For information, see Configuring Multi-Region Backups for VMware Cloud Director VMs.

Disable SSL/TLS Certificate Verification

To skip the SSL certificate validation, in the SSL/TLS management area, move the Disable SSL/TLS certificate verification toggle to the right.

Note

If the SSL certificate validation is successful during hypervisor creation and the certificate expires, then backup and restore operations will fail. To resolve this, you can skip SSL certificate validation or manually add the certificate thumbprint.

To add a thumbprint, click the Edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil next to SSL/TLS certificate thumbprint. In the Edit thumbprint dialog box, specify a valid thumbprint and click Save.

Modify Access Nodes

To modify access nodes for the hypervisor, in the Access nodes area, click Actions > Edit to modify the list of access nodes that can be used for the hypervisor.

To deploy a new access node for Linux, in the Access nodes area, click Actions > Deploy new Linux access node.

Assign Roles to Users or User Groups

To allow a user or user group to perform data management operations on the hypervisor, create a security association between the user or user group.

In the Security area, click Edit to associate users, groups, or roles with the hypervisor, or to specify owners and permissions.

Procedure

  1. On the Configuration tab, in the Security section, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

    The Security dialog box appears.

  2. On the Associations tab, enter the name of the user or user group, select the role to assign, and then click Add.

  3. Click Save.

Assign Owners and Permissions

You can specify owners and permissions for the hypervisor.

  1. On the Configuration tab, in the Security section, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

    The Security dialog box appears.

  2. On the Owners tab, enter the name of the user or user group to assign as an owner.

  3. Under Permissions, select the permissions to give to the owner.

  4. Click Save.

Add or Remove vCenter

  1. In the vCenters area, click the edit button edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

The Edit vCenters dialog box appears.

  2. To add a vCenter hypervisor, from the vCenters list, select the hypervisor.

The Edit vCenter credentials dialog box appears.

    1. Enter the username and password for the vCenter.

    2. Click Save.

    3. To remove a vCenter, click the action button action_button in the row for the vCenter, and then click Delete.

    4. Click Save.
