Edge Drive for End Users

Edge Drive is a cloud-based storage solution that enables users to access files from almost anywhere. When users upload files to their Edge Drive, those files can be accessed on all Edge Drive-enabled computers and through the Web Console. When files in the Edge Drive are edited, the changes appear on all the user’s Edge Drive-enabled devices. Files in Edge Drive are protected, so users can retrieve the files from Edge Drive to another location even if the original files are lost.

Edge Drive Locations

Edge Drive on the Web

You can access your Edge Drive from any web-enabled device by logging on to the Web Console. With Edge Drive on the Web Console, you can:

  • Drag files from your computer to Edge Drive.

  • View and download files to your computer from Edge Drive.

  • Add subfolders and move files within Edge Drive.

  • Share files with other users.

  • Remove files and folders in Edge Drive.

For more information, see Web Console section in Accessing Edge Drive.

Edge Drive on Your Laptop

You can configure Edge Drive on your laptops by using one of the following methods:

  • Offline Access

You can enable offline access to your Edge Drive content by adding a local Edge Drive folder to your laptop's file system. In this method, a copy of your Edge Drive content is retained locally on your Edge Drive folder and can be accessed even when your laptop is offline (not connected to the network). When the network is available, the local copy is synchronized with your Edge Drive. This configuration is useful for users who are required to work where there is no network connectivity.

For more information, see Adding an Edge Drive Folder.

    Important

Offline Edge Drive is a sync solution that synchronizes the files in the local Edge Drive folder with your Edge Drive. To protect the files in the offline Edge Drive folder, you must back up the Edge Drive folder using the file system backup solution for laptops. For instructions on configuring laptop backup for the Edge Drive folder, see Adding Cloud Storage Devices to Backups for Laptop Backup.

  • Cloud

Using a cloud configuration, you can access your Edge Drive contents by adding a local virtual drive to your Windows laptops. The contents reside on your Edge Drive and do not occupy local disk space. Therefore, you must be connected to the network to access your Edge Drive contents. This configuration is useful for users who are always connected to the network or when there are space constraints on your laptops.

For more information, see Adding a Local Virtual Drive.

In addition, you can access your Edge Drive from client applications that support WebDAV protocol without installing any Commvault components on your computer. For more information, see WebDAV Enabled Applications section in Accessing Edge Drive.

Edge Drive on Mobile Devices

You can access your Edge Drive from your Apple or Android mobile devices using the Edge application. Any changes to the Edge Drive content on your mobile device are synced with your other Edge Drive locations. With Edge Drive on mobile device, you can perform the following operations::

  • Upload photos and videos to Edge Drive. On Android devices, you can also upload other file types.

  • View and download files to the Edge application on your mobile device.

  • Add subfolders, rename, and move files and folders within Edge Drive.

  • Share files with other users.

  • Remove files and folders in Edge Drive.

For more information, see Accessing Edge Drive from Mobile Devices.

Edge Drive versus Sync Folders

The following table lists the difference between synchronizing data using Sync Folders and Edge Drive:

Sync Folders

Edge Drive

Definition

A Web Console operation that synchronizes the data residing in multiple folders with other laptop computers owned by the user.

Cloud-based storage solution that allows you to store files and folders in your Edge Drive repository and automatically synchronize the data across all your Edge Drive-enabled devices and the Web Console.

Synchronization

You must manually configure the sync folders on the Web Console.

When you designate an Edge Drive folder on your laptop, files in your Edge Drive repository are automatically synchronized with the Edge Drive folder. Similarly, files modified within the Edge Drive folder on your laptop computer are synchronized automatically with your Edge Drive repository and updated across all your Edge Drive-enabled devices and the Web Console.

Folders synchronized

Using Sync Folders, you can synchronize the data in multiple folders with other laptop computers.

By using Edge Drive, data residing only in the assigned Edge Drive folder is synchronized with your Edge Drive repository.

Operations allowed on synchronized files

Files synchronized using Sync Folder operations can be previewed, downloaded to local computer, or restored to a different location from the Web Console.

Edge Drive files are previewed and downloaded from Web Console or Edge Drive-enabled devices to the local computer or device.

For more information on synchronizing data using Sync Folders, see Sync Folders.

Getting Started

After the administrator has added you as a member of the user group having permissions to access Edge Drive, you can start using your Edge Drive to store files online. See Accessing Your Edge Drive for instructions on how to get started.
