Managing File System Subclients

Subclients contain information about what data is backed up. You can create a user-defined subclient to manage and back up specific data files.

Subclients can contain a combination of files and directories.

You can use wildcards to define the subclient content, exclusions, and exceptions.

For more information on the supported Windows Wildcards, see Supported Wildcards for the Windows File System.

For more information on the supported UNIX Wildcards, see Supported Wildcards for UNIX File Systems.

You can create subclients for specific folders and files that frequently change or have a different backup schedule.

Note

If you change the subclient content from the default of "\" or "/" to a specific directory, the next backup job is a Full backup, irrespective of the backup type you selected.

If a file is located under multiple directories and those directories are added as subclient content, the file is backed up only once. If two subclients within the same backup set have overlapping content, then the file is backed up only once and the other subclient skips the common file.

  • If a file is located under multiple directories and those directories are added as subclient content, the file is backed up multiple times. However, the default subclient skips the content specified in the other subclients within the same backup set.

  • If a client belongs to multiple client groups or companies, or if a subclient is associated to a subclient policy and a client group or company, then all of the filters are applied during backups.

Before You Begin

  1. If you do not want to use the default backup set, create a backup set.

  2. Make sure that you have the following information:

    • The plan to assign to the subclient

Note: You can only assign a plan to a subclient when it is the only subclient in the backup set.

Plans contain information about how often the software backs up the data and the storage library.

      For more information, see Plans.

Procedure

You can add a subclient on the subclient details page.

  1. From the navigation pane, click Administration > Servers > server > agent > backup set.

  2. In the Actions column, click Add subclient.

    The Add Subclient page appears.

  3. In the General area, in the Subclient Name box, type the subclient name.

  4. In the Backup configuration area, select a server plan from the Plan list.

  5. On the Content tab, choose the data to include in the backup.

    • To enter paths to items you want to include in backups, in the Enter custom path field, enter a path, and then click the add Managing File System Subclients (1) button.

    • To select items from a file system view of the server, click Browse, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want to include in backups.

    • To use a saved user credentials to access the file system, click Impersonate user, and then select the credential to use.

  6. To add filters to exclude items from backups, in the Exclusions tab, do the following:

    • To select items from a file system view of the server, click Browse, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want to exclude from backups.

    • To configure how global exceptions are applied to the subclient, from the Include global exception filters list, select one of the following:

      • Use cell level policy (default): Enables or disables the global exceptions for the subclient depending on whether the Use global filters on all subclients option is enabled for the environment.

      • On: Enables the global exceptions for the subclient.

      • Off: Disables the global exceptions for the subclient.

  7. To configure exceptions to the exclusion filters, in the Exceptions tab, do the following:

    • To enter paths to items you want to except from the backup filters (exclusions), in the Enter custom path field, enter a filter pattern, and then click the add Managing File System Subclients (3) button.

    • To select items from a file system view of the server, click Browse, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want to except from the backup filters (exclusions).

  8. Click Save.

Result

The software adds the subclient and you can perform backup and restore operations on the subclient. If you assigned a plan to the subclient, the software automatically backs up the subclient according to the schedule plans
