Restoring a SAP HANA IntelliSnap Backup to a New Host or a New Instance (Database Copy)

You can restore a Multitenant Database IntelliSnap backup to a new client.

The tenant database can be the same as the source, or a new database.

You can restore from a snapshot or tape copy.

When the software performs the restore, it restores the SYSTEMDB, and then restores the tenant database.

If you want to recover only the data, then you must perform the restore by using a full backup.

Note

If you have a SAP HANA 2.0 configuration, then the source SID and the target SID must match.

Before You Begin

  1. Perform a full backup of the tenant database. For more information, see Performing a SAP HANA Multitenant Database ContainerIntelliSnap Full Backup.

  2. Verify that the restore environment has the same set of nodes as the backup environment. In case of any configuration file modification in the backup environment, make the same modifications in the restore environment before starting the recovery process.

  3. Verify that the SAP HANA software version (including the SPS version) that is used for restore is of the same version or later than the software version used during backup.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > SAP HANA.

  2. Right-click the instance, point to All Tasks, and then click Browse and Restore.

  3. On the Browse and Restore dialog box, select Latest Backup and click View Content.

  4. From the Browse window, select the data to restore in the right pane and click Recover All Selected.

  5. On the Restore Options dialog box, select the destination client and instance:

    1. From the Destination Client list, select the destination client for the restore.

When you select a new destination, the software populates the Destination Instance list with the configured instances.

    2. To restore to a new database, from the Destination Instance list, the destination instance for the restore.

    3. In the Destination Instance HANA Data Directory box, type the full path where the destination instance data resides.

  6. Choose the type of restore that you want to perform:

Recover the database to the most recent state
    1. Select Recover Database To.

    2. Select Most Recent State.

    Recover to a point-in-time
    1. Select Recover Database To.

    2. Select Point In Time.

    3. Select the date and time.

Note: If the time zone is different on the CommServe computer and client, in the Time Zone box, select the client computer time zone.

    Recover only the data

To use this option, you must perform the restore by using a full backup.

If you restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, then you must have the catalog backup available with backint. SAP HANA creates the internal backup ID and the Commvault software displays the value on the Job Details dialog box.

If you restore by specifying the backup prefix, then you do not have to have the catalog backup available with backint. The Commvault software creates the backup prefix by pre-pending the job ID to the backup prefix. For example, JOB_ID_SNAP.

    1. Select Recover data only.

    2. Select the backup to use for the restore:

      • To restore by specifying the backup prefix, in the Backup prefix box, type the backup prefix for the backup that you want to restore.

You can view the backup prefix on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Backup Prefix). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

      • To restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, in the Internal Backup ID box, type the internal backup job ID that you want to restore.

You can view the SAP HANA internal backup job ID on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Internal Backup ID). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

  7. To verify that all the backups required for the recovery operation are available, select the Check Access check box.

  8. Select the Initialize log area check box.

    Note

For restores that are not to a point-in-time, the software automatically selects this check box and makes this check box unavailable.

  9. Best Practice: Select the Use Delta Backups check box.

    Note

This is the default option. If you do not select this check box, the software only uses the log backups for the recovery operation.

  10. Optional: Restore from a copy precedence.

If the backup is corrupted, restore from a storage policy copy.

For more information on modifying the copy precedence of a storage policy copy, see Copy Precedence.

    1. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.

    2. On the Copy Precedence tab, select the Restore from Copy Precedence number check box and enter a copy precedence number.

    3. Click OK to close the Advanced Restore Options dialog box.

  11. Click OK to close the Restore Options dialog box and start the restore.
