Creating a User-Defined Farm Subclient

Subclients contain information about what data is backed up. You can create a user-defined subclients to manage and back up specific data files.

Farm components might contain portions of data that require more frequent backup operations than the others. For example, web applications with databases which consist of records that are entered or changed on a daily basis might require nightly backups, whereas, some service applications might require weekly backups only. You can create user-defined subclients to assign different backup schedules as required.

You can create separate subclients for configuration databases because of the following reasons:

  • Configuration database can be very large.

  • It can be backed up but cannot be restored.

  • It does not support differential backup (as this backup is converted to a full backup).

  • It does not support partial backup.

Note

When you create a user-defined subclient, the contents of the user-defined subclient will be excluded from the default subclient.

About This Task

A user-defined farm subclient can back up the following types of data:

  • Configuration database

  • Service applications

  • Service application proxies

  • Windows SharePoint Services Web applications

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > SharePoint Server.

  2. Right-click Databases, point to All Tasks, and then click New Subclient.

    The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  3. In the Subclient Name box, type a name.

  4. To select the databases or other entities (like, a web application) that you want to back up, on the Content tab, click Browse, and then click Add.

    Repeat this step to include all the entities that you want to backup.

  5. On the Storage Device tab, in the Storage Policy list, click a storage policy to associate with the subclient.

    Tip: To create a new storage policy, click Create Storage Policy, and then follow the instructions in the storage policy creation wizard.

  6. Optional: On the Content Database Options tab, from the SQL client to protect Content Databases list, select the name of the SQL server client computer where SharePoint content databases reside.

  7. Click OK.

Notes

  • You can use a single subclient if you have multiple content databases on a single SQL server.

  • If you have content databases on multiple backend SQL servers, you can create separate subclients for each SQL server.

  • In case of SQL Always On client, select the availability group client as the SQL client.

Result

A subclient with the content that you want to back up is created under the farm backup set that you selected.
