Creating a Virtualization Client for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

Create a virtualization client to manage backup and restore operations for a RHEV Manager.

To perform backup operations, each virtualization client can include multiple proxies where the Virtual Server Agent is installed. The virtualization client also enables proxy teaming, enabling proxy failovers for fault tolerant backups. Using multiple proxies for each virtualization client makes it possible to perform backups for a large number of virtual machines in a limited backup window.

When you create a virtualization client, the Commvault software automatically creates a Red Hat instance, a backup set, and a default subclient that you can use to protect all virtual machines. You can create additional subclients to perform separate protection operations for different groups of virtual machines.

Before You Begin

• Install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on a dedicated virtual machine (proxy) on each Red Hat datacenter within a cluster. The dedicated proxy in each datacenter can back up all the VMs in that datacenter.

• Obtain the following information from your Red Hat administrator:

  • Host name for the RHEV Manager host.

  • Admin user credentials for the RHEV Manager host.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computers, point to New Client > Virtualization, and then click Red Hat.

   The Create Red Hat Client dialog box is displayed.

2. In the Client Name box, enter a host name, fully qualified host name, or IP address for the RHEV Manager host.

3. In the User Name and Password boxes, enter credentials for a user account with administrative privileges on the RHEV Manager.

4. In the Confirm Password box, re-confirm the password for the user account.

5. From the Storage Policy list, select a storage policy to associate with the virtualization client.

   The storage policy you select is also associated with the default subclient that is created automatically for the virtualization client.

6. Click Add to identify VSA proxies that can perform backups for the client.

7. In the Select Clients / Client Groups dialog box:

   • Select one or more proxies from the Exclude list. Add all VSA proxies that are on VMs in the same data center. Only proxies that match the type of the virtualization client are displayed.

     The list displays all the clients that have the Virtual Server Agent installed and all the client groups. You can select one or more clients or client groups. When you select a client group, ensure that at least one client in the group has the Virtual Server Agent installed.

     The first proxy for a client acts as a coordinator to allocate jobs to other proxies.

   • Click Include or Include All, and then click OK.

8. Click OK.

Creating a virtualization client automatically creates a Red Hat instance, default backup set, and default subclient.
