The Download Center is an interface for organizing digital resources, or packages, in your enterprise and making them available for end-users to download from the Web Console.
After an administrator has configured the Download Center, packages can be added to the Download Center from any network location, Web Server, or Commvault ObjectStore, which are called repositories. When adding packages to the Download Center, the administrator supplies additional metadata about the package, which enables end-users to search, sort, and filter the list of packages in the Download Center. Packages are stored in their original location, so when a user logs in to the Web Console and downloads a package from the Download Center, the package is retrieved directly from the repository and downloaded to the user's machine. Although the Download Center is a central location for end-users to obtain digital resources, there is no need for a central storage location for packages, which eliminates unnecessary data movement and duplicated data.
Download Center Packages
The digital resources that can be downloaded from Download Center are referred to as packages in this documentation.
Types of Download Center Repositories
In Download Center, packages are downloaded from a network location, Web Server, or ObjectStore. These locations, called Download Center repositories, are configured by an administrator from the Download Center page in the Web Console. After configuring a repository, administrators can make items in the repository available for end-users to download from Download Center.
The following describes the types of repositories that you can configure for Download Center and suggestions for selecting the appropriate type of repository for your particular needs.
ObjectStore
The Commvault ObjectStore is a data storage repository that you can configure from the CommCell Console. The ObjectStore enables you to manage your data with a well-defined set of APIs. You can also manage your data in the ObjectStore using the Edge Drive interface in the Web Console. Administrators can upload data to ObjectStore using Edge or the ObjectStore APIs, configure the ObjectStore as a Download Center repository, and then add packages from ObjectStore to enable end-users to download the packages to their own machines.
When using an ObjectStore repository, you can manage your data using APIs or through the Edge interface. You can also configure deduplication for ObjectStore and store your packages on more inexpensive backup media.

For information about creating an ObjectStore that you can use as a Download Center repository, see ObjectStore.

For information about how to upload and manage data in ObjectStore using the Edge Drive interface, see Edge Drive for End Users.
Network Location
You can configure a network location as a Download Center repository. Selecting a network location is useful if your packages reside on a file server or any other type of location that can be accessed over the network.
Web Server
The Web Server repository allows administrators to add packages to Download Center that are stored on the local Web Server. This repository can be configured if you already have data stored on the Web Server that you want to make available to end-users. However, if you have multiple Web Servers in your CommCell environment, we recommend using a network location or ObjectStore repository as downloads and read-me previews might not work correctly across different Web Servers.
