External Data Connector Overview

You can use the External Data Connector to collect information from other product environments, and then merge the data into a virtual CommCell in the Cloud environment. For environments where supported backup products are already installed, some information is automatically collected and merged into a virtual CommCell, including the following:

  • Hosts

  • Clients

  • Schedules

  • Compression options

  • Encryption directives

Predefined scripts (with vendor-specific commands underneath) can be downloaded for easier execution of output files bundling and transfer. Also, direct commands can be run on the vendor server. Please see the script in order to learn which commands need to be run.

How It Works

Register your CommServe computer to create a user account for our Cloud Services Web site, and then log in to download the scripts. Run the scripts on your server, and then upload the data for analysis. A virtual machine with a CommCell based on the collected data is created. Your Account Representative will send you an e-mail that includes a link to a virtual CommCell console and login credentials. You can use this virtual CommCell to run reports based on the discovered data.

Caution

Do not run a live EDC discovery job on the production CommServe computer.

Email

After you submit your data through the cloud network, you will receive an e-mail regarding the submission. The e-mail contains reports about the data that you submitted and details about your virtual CommCell. Reports attached to the e-mail include the following:

  • EDC Data View Report

  • Backup Job Summary Report

  • License Summary Report

You can use the credentials included in this e-mail to log into your virtual CommCell and run reports on the data that you collected. For more information about the reports that you can run on your virtual CommCell, see External Data Connector - Reports.

Collected Information

The External Data Connector software saves the collected data in text files in a specified output folder. The collected data includes the names of client computers, data libraries, policies, schedules, and other similar information.

Commvault does not collect any of the following information:

  • User names

  • Passwords

  • IP addresses

You can view the collected data and mask any data before you upload it to the External Data Connector.

If You Cannot Use the Cloud

In cases where the EDC Cloud solution is not feasible, you can install a CommCell with the on-site EDC Tool. For information about the on-site EDC Tool, see the following:

Other Migration Solutions

You can also migrate data from other backup vendors, like NetBackup and Avamar to a Commvault ObjectStore, using a third-party data migration solution from Commvault. For more information, see Migration of Third-Party Data to ObjectStore.
