License Usage Calculations

License usage is calculated for the current license consumption and the peak license consumption. Current usage appears in the License Summary Report and peak usage appears in the Subclient Peak Usage Report.

Current Usage

Current license usage is the current amount of data protected or the current number of entities, such as users, devices, or VMs, protected at any given time. The current license usage changes any time the size of protected data increases or decreases, or any time an entity is added or removed. You can view the current license usage in the License Summary Report.

Subclient Peak Usage

Subclient peak license usage is the total amount of data protected or the total number of entities protected, such as users, devices, or VMs, throughout an entire month. The peak continues to grow over the course of a month as more data is protected or more entities are added to the CommCell environment. You can view the subclient peak license usage in the Subclient Peak Usage Report.

CommCell Peak Usage

CommCell peak license usage is another kind of peak data calculated in a CommCell environment. It is the largest amount of data protected or the highest number of entities protected, such as users, devices, or VMs, during a month. The CommCell peak license usage changes only when the size of protected data or the number of entities reaches a new high. This data appears in the Peak Capacity Usage Growth report.

Managed Service Providers

If you are a service provider who bills customers, you should use the Subclient Peak Usage Report for this purpose. This report aligns with your billing needs because it includes all clients and entities (users, devices, VMs and so on) that were active early in the month but were deconfigured or deleted later in the month. The Peak Capacity Usage Growth Report does not include the comprehensive list of clients and entities required for accurate billing.

The Subclient Peak Usage Report is available from Commvault version 11.16. The Peak Capacity Usage Growth Report will be replaced by the Subclient Peak Usage Report in a future Commvault version. If you are currently using the Peak Capacity Usage Growth Report for your billing needs, you should begin using the Subclient Peak Usage Report as soon as possible.

Example of License Usage Calculations

The following example explains how license usage calculations can change over time during a single month.

July 1

On July 1, a CommCell environment includes 3 clients that contain a total of 3 TB of protected data.

Data

Client 1

1 TB

Client 2

1 TB

Client 3

1 TB

Therefore, the current license usage is 3 clients and 3 TB, the peak CommCell usage is 3 clients and 3 TB, and the subclient peak license usage is 3 clients and 3 TB.

July 10

On July 10, 2 clients that contain 3 TB are added and 1 client that contains 1 TB is removed.

Therefore, the current usage is 4 clients and 5 TB, the peak CommCell usage is 4 clients and 5 TB, and the subclient peak usage is 5 clients and 5 TB.
