Performing End User Operations for VM Lifecycle Management

Basic Operations

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, VMware

You can suspend, power off, or restart the virtual machine. In order to perform other advanced operations such as editing or deleting the virtual machine, you must first suspend or power off the virtual machine.

Note

Suspending, powering off, or restarting a virtual machine will disrupt access to the virtual machine for other users. Ensure no other users are currently using the virtual machine prior to performing these functions.

My Virtual Machines Page

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears. Different operations are available, depending on whether you select one virtual machine or more than one virtual machine.

  3. Select one or more virtual machines, and then perform any of the following operations:

    • To temporarily disable use of the virtual machine, click Suspend suspend_button.

      This option is available only for VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines.

    • To turn off the virtual machine, click Power Off power_off_button.

    • To restart the virtual machine, click Restart restart_button.

  4. Select one virtual machine, and then perform any of the following operations:

    • To temporarily disable use of the virtual machine, click Suspend suspend_button.

      This option is available only for VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines.

    • To turn off the virtual machine, click Power Off power_off_button.

    • To restart the virtual machine, click Restart restart_button.

    • To remote desktop to the virtual machine, click Connect using a remote desktop remote_desktop_button.

    • To delete the virtual machine, click Delete delete_button.

    • To renew the virtual machine, click Renew renew_button.

Virtual Machine Details Page

To perform basic functions from the virtual machine details page:

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Perform any of the following operations:

    • To temporarily disable use of the virtual machine, click Suspend suspend_button.

      This option is available only for VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines.

    • To turn off the virtual machine, click Power Off power_off_button.

    • To restart the virtual machine, click Restart restart_button.

Starting a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, VMware

To start a virtual machine after it has been suspended or powered off:

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Start button start_button.

    A message appears that says the power on operation has completed.

Modify a Virtual Machine

You can rename or change settings, such as memory size and disk space, for any virtual machine.

Rename or Change the Expiration Date of a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, VMware

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Edit button edit button yellow and red pencil.

    The Edit Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. In the Name box, enter a name for the virtual machine. The name must follow the pattern displayed.

    For example, if the pattern displayed is MyVM???, then your virtual machine name must consist of the following:

    MyVM<three_characters>

  6. (Optional) In the Description box, enter a new description for the virtual machine.

  7. (Optional) In the Expiration Date box, enter a new expiration date for the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine will not be available past the expiration date.

  8. Click Finish.

    A message appears that says your changes require the virtual machine to restart.

  9. Click Submit.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears. The name of the virtual machine is changed.

Edit Memory, CPU, or NIC Settings

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V

You can change the amount of memory, number of CPUs, and the number of NICs.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Edit button edit button yellow and red pencil.

    The Edit Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. In the left pane, click Configuration.

  6. Perform any of the following operations:

    • In the Memory box, change the amount of memory(in GB) for the virtual machine.

      Drag the customization bar to refine the memory amount in MB.

    • In the Number of CPUs box, change the number of CPUs for the virtual machine.

    • In the Number of NICs, change the number of NICs for the virtual machine.

  7. Click Finish.

Add or Edit Disk Space

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V

You can edit the amount of disk space available.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Edit button edit button yellow and red pencil.

    The Edit Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. In the left pane, click Disks.

  6. Enter the amount of disk space for the virtual machine.

    You can also drag the customization bar to refine the size.

  7. Click Finish.

Add or Edit Disks

Applies To: Amazon

You can add an additional disk and specify its size.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Edit button edit button yellow and red pencil.

    The Edit Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. On the Name page, click Next.

  6. On the Disks page, if you have not done so already, select Disk Two.

  7. In the Type list, specify the disk type.

    • To use a new disk, select the Empty Disk, and then enter the amount of disk space for the second disk.

      You can also drag the customization bar to refine the size.

    • To use an existing snapshot, select Snapshot, and then from the Snapshot list, select the snapshot that you want to use.

  8. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Edit Size Types

Applies To: Azure Classic

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click the Edit button edit button yellow and red pencil.

    The Edit Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. On the Name page, click Next.

  6. On the Configuration page, select a size type to use for your virtual machine, and then click Next.

    Azure Classic size types define the number of CPU cores, and memory size available for each virtual machine.

    On the Disks page, you can view the maximum disk size and the amount of available storage on the disk.

    You cannot edit settings on the Disks page.

  7. Click Next, and then click Finish.

Delete a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, Oracle Cloud, VMware

If you delete a virtual machine, it will no longer be available for use and you can no longer access any data or applications residing on it.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Either turn off or suspend the virtual machine.

    • To turn off the virtual machine, click Power Offpower_off_button.

    • To suspend the virtual machine, click Suspendsuspend_button.

    A message appears that says the suspend operation has completed.

  5. Click Deletedelete_button.

    A message appears that asks you to confirm that you want to delete the virtual machine.

  6. Click Yes.

    A message appears that says the delete operation is complete.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

Renew a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, Oracle Cloud, VMware

If your virtual machine expires, you can renew it from the virtual machine page.

To renew your virtual machine:

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click Renewrenew_button.

  5. In the Expiration box, enter a new expiration date, and then click OK.

    The virtual machine will not be available past the expiration date.

Clone a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Hyper-V, VMware

The Clone optioncreates a copy of an existing virtual machine. The new virtual machine retains the same characteristics of the virtual machine from which it was cloned (such as the operating system). This option is useful if you want to create a virtual machine from a template that is no longer available.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click Cloneclone_button.

    The Clone Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. In the Name box, enter a name for the cloned virtual machine.

  6. In the Description box, enter a description for the cloned virtual machine, such as the date and/or name of the machine being cloned.

  7. In the Expiration box, enter the date on which the cloned virtual machine will expire.

  8. In the Password and Confirm Password boxes, enter an administrator password to use for the new virtual machine.

  9. Click Submit.

    A message appears that says the Clone Virtual Machine Job was submitted successfully. You can monitor the progress of the job on the My Virtual Machines list. You will receive an e-mail when the job has completed.

Back Up a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Hyper-V, VMware

You must back up your virtual machine through the CommCell Console that is associated with your Web Console.

View Recent Backup Jobs

You can view a list of recent backup jobs for a virtual machine.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. In the Restore section, click Recent Backup Jobs.

    The Recent Backup Jobs page appears.

Restore Files

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V

You can restore files from the most recent backup of your virtual machine. Backups must be created on the CommCell Console.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. In the Restore section, click Select Files.

    The Restore Files page appears.

  5. Select the files that you want to restore.

    To access files at a lower level, click on the file name.

  6. At the top of the page, click Restore.

    The Restore Options dialog box appears.

  7. In the Destination Path, enter the location in which you want to restore the files, and then click Restore Now.

    A message appears that says the Restore job is in progress. You can monitor the progress of the job on the virtual machine page. Another message appears when the Restore job has completed.

View Recent Restore Jobs

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. In the Restore section, click Recent Restore Jobs.

    The Recent Restore Jobs page appears.

Download Files

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V

You can download files and folders for virtual machines that you own. The following requirements apply:

  • The virtual machine must have been backed up.

  • The following permissions must be set on the client for the source VM:

    • Browse

    • Download

    • In Place Recover

    • Out of Place Recover

Procedure

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click Select Files.

    The Restore Files page appears.

  5. Select files or folders to be downloaded, and then click Download.

    The download is saved in the default download location for the computer where you performed the operation.

Manage Snapshots

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V, Amazon

The Snapshotfeature allows you to create an exact image of a virtual machine as it exists at the time the snapshot is taken. If the virtual machine encounters an irreversible problem, for example, important files are permanently deleted, or the operating system becomes corrupted, you can revert a virtual machine to its snapshot. Reverting to the snapshot brings the virtual machine back to the state it was in when the snapshot was taken. You can also revert from a snapshot if you no longer wish to use the virtual machine in its snapshot state.

Create a Snapshot

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click CreateSnapshot create_snapshot_button.

    The Create Snapshot dialog box appears.

  5. In the Name box, enter a name for the snapshot.

  6. In the Description box, enter a descriptionof the snapshot, such as a date and/or a description of files existing on the virtual machine at the point the snapshot is taken.

  7. Click Submit.

    A message appears that says the Snapshot Job was submitted successfully. You can monitor the progress of the job on the virtual machine page. Another message appears when the Snapshot Job has completed.

Revert to a Snapshot

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click ViewSnapshots view_snapshots_button.

    The Snapshots dialog box appears.

  5. Select a snapshot from the list, and then click Revert.

    A message appears that says the Snapshot Job was submitted successfully. You can monitor the progress of the job on the virtual machine page. Another message appears when the Snapshot Job has completed.

Delete a Snapshot

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click ViewSnapshots view_snapshots_button.

    The Snapshots dialog box appears.

  5. Select a snapshot from the list, and then click Delete.

    A message appears that says the Delete Snapshot Job was submitted successfully. You can monitor the progress of the job on the virtual machine page. Another message appears when the Delete Snapshot Job has completed.

Revert to the Current Snapshot

To revert the virtual machine to the current snapshot:

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Click Revert to Current Snapshot revert_to_snapshot_button.

    A message appears that says the Revert to Current Snapshot Job was submitted successfully. You can monitor the progress of the job on the virtual machine page. Another message appears when the Revert to Current Snapshot Job has completed.

Synchronize Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, VMware

If the IP address is not displayed or is incorrect, or if snapshots and/or hard disk information is not correctly displayed, you can synchronize the virtual machine with its host to update the latest information from the CommServe computer.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. At the top of the page, click Synchronize.

    A message appears that says the virtual machine refreshed successfully.

Remote Desktop to a Virtual Machine

Applies To: VMware, Hyper-V, Azure Classic

You can open a remote desktop to a virtual machine from the Web Console.

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. At the top of the page, click Remote Desktop.

  5. Select Open, and then click OK.

    The Windows Security dialog box appears.

  6. Enter you credentials, and then click OK to log into the virtual machine.

    A remote desktop window to the virtual machine appears.

Share a Virtual Machine

Applies To: Amazon, Azure Classic, Hyper-V, VMware

To share a virtual machine with another user:

  1. Log into the Web Console. For instructions, see Accessing the Web Console.

  2. Click Virtual Machines.

    The My Virtual Machines list appears.

  3. Click the name of the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine page appears.

  4. Next to Owners, click Edit.

    The Share Virtual Machine dialog box appears.

  5. In the Add a New User box, enter the name of the user with whom you want to share the virtual machine, and then click the add button add_button.

    The user name appears in the Existing Users list.

  6. Click Save.
