Replication Requirements and Options for Amazon

Requirements

  • Assign permissions for the AWS user as described in Amazon Web Services User Permissions for VM Conversion.

  • You can use any VSA proxy to perform the replication operation, either running on an Amazon instance or externally with connectivity into the Amazon account. Using an external proxy avoids the cost associated with running an Amazon instance.

  • For cross-hypervisor restores or replication from VMware to Amazon, you can use a VSA access node that runs on Windows or Linux. If you use a VSA access node that runs on Linux, for both Windows and Linux guest VMs, the drivers must be installed on the source before performing the backup. Otherwise, the replication operation fails. You cannot use a Linux proxy for the import method.

  • To validate synced instances, the Validate Destination Instance (Power ON & OFF) option must be ON in the replication schedule.

  • To use the HotAdd restore process, review the requirements in HotAdd Restores. When configuring replication to use HotAdd:

    • Select a proxy running in Amazon.

    • From the Live Sync Options dialog box, click Configure and enter guest credentials for the source VM.

    • You do not need to specify an Amazon bucket because the restore writes to volumes on the VSA proxy.

    • To replicate source VMs that run on a version of Windows Server earlier than Windows Server 2012 R2, when the Windows AutoAdminLogon feature is disabled or when a firewall is in place in the environment, install drivers on source VMs before performing the backup that is used for replication, as described in Installing Drivers Manually for HotAdd Replication.

Options

The following sections provide information about the options on each page of the Live Sync Options for Subclient wizard.

Destination

  • Virtualization Client: From this list, select the Amazon virtualization client that was created with appropriate access keys for the AWS account.

    • IAM Role: Indicates whether IAM role authentication is enabled for the virtualization client.
  • Proxy Client: Displays the name of the proxy computer that will be used to perform the replication operation. By default, the proxy computer that was specified at the instance level is used to replicate changes to the destination instance. To use a different proxy, select the name of the proxy from the list.

For HotAdd restores, select a proxy running in Amazon.

Instances

  • Add VMs: Click to browse for backed up virtual machines that can be replicated.

  • Remove VMs: Click to remove selected VMs from the replication schedule.

  • Instance and Volume: This column displays the list of all the source virtual machines and disks (instances and volumes) selected for sync. Expand each virtual machine (instance) to view the disks (volumes).

  • Change Instance display name to: Edit the entry in this column to specify a new name for the destination instance.

  • Availability Zone: From this list, select the availability zone where the destination instance should be created. Availability zones are provided through your Amazon account.

  • Amazon Options: Click Configure to define additional configuration options. You can select more than one instance at a time to define these settings.

The Amazon Cloud Options dialog box appears.

    • Destination VM: Displays the name of the destination instance.

      • Edit Destination VM Name: Select Prefix or Suffix, and then enter a string that should be appended to all destination VM names.

        Note

This field is applicable only when multiple VMs are selected in a replication schedule.

    • Availability Zone: Select the availability zone where the instance is imported. Availability zones are provided through your Amazon account.

    • AMI Selection: (Optional) Select an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that can be used to specify the software configuration for the restored instance.

    • Instance Type: From this list, select an instance type that provides the available CPU cores and memory for the instance. If you choose Auto (the default option), the instance type is selected based on the corresponding settings for the source VM. The destination instance type must be equal to or greater than the specifications of the source VM.

    • Operating System: Select Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, or Linux 64-bit to match the operating system of the source VM. If necessary, you can select Auto to automatically detect the operating system of the source VM.

    • Guest Credentials: For HotAdd restores, enter the Domain/Computer name, User Name, and Password.

    • Instance Settings:

      • IAM Role: To use an IAM role to access the destination instance, select the role from the list.

The VSA proxy used for the replication operation must have the IAM role attached.

      • Enable Termination protection: To prevent the restored instance from being terminated from the AWS portal, select this option.

    • Network Settings: Select an EC2 or a VPC network for the restored instances.

      • Network: If you select an EC2 network, the second Network and Private IP fields are not displayed.

For a VPC network, select a subnet and network interface for the primary network interface.

      • Private IP: (Applicable only to VPC) If you select a new network interface as a VPC, specify a private IP that corresponds with the VPC.

If you specify a specific Private IP, the replication operation creates and attaches the network interface with that IP. If you leave the Private IP field blank, the operation creates a new network interface that matches the chosen VPC, and then attaches it.

      • Network: (Applicable only to VPC) For a VPC network, select a subnet and network interface for the secondary network.

      • Security Groups: Select a security group for the specified network.

Restore Options

  • Validate Destination VM (Power ON & OFF): Select this option to run the destination instance automatically after it is created in Amazon, check the instance status and system status, and then turn the instance off. Validation ensures that the synced instance is usable.

  • Unconditionally overwrite Instance with the same name: If you are replacing an existing instance in Amazon, select this option to overwrite the existing instance and its volumes and replace them with the newly converted instance and volumes. The overwrite option succeeds only if there is a single instance in Amazon with the same name. If there are multiple instances with the same name, the job goes pending.

  • Distribute VM workload: To submit separate jobs for a replication schedule, select this option and select the number of VMs per job. When this option is used, jobs are submitted sequentially, with each job beginning after the previous job has completed.
