Restoring a SAP HANA MDC Scale Out Database

A database restore might be necessary when the data area or the log area is damaged, to recover from a logical error or to copy the database.

The SAP HANA software brings the database down before the restore, and brings the database up after the restore completes.

Before You Begin

  1. Perform a full backup of the tenant database. For more information, see Performing a SAP HANA Scale Out IntelliSnap Full Backup Operation.

  2. Verify that the restore environment has the same set of nodes and the topology as the backup environment. In case of any configuration file modification in the backup environment, make the same modifications in the restore environment before starting the recovery process. The instance SID can be the same as or different from the backup instance SID.

  3. Verify that the SAP HANA software version (including the SPS version) that is used for restore is of the same version or later than the software version used during backup.

  4. If you changed the node order on the pseudo-client, and the master node is no longer the first node, then reconfigure the node order in the pseudo-client. For more information, see Creating a SAP HANA Scale Out Pseudo-Client.

Restore Options

You can restore from a snapshot or backup copy.

When the software performs the restore operation, it restores the SYSTEMDB, and then restores the tenant database.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > SAP HANA > instance.

  2. Right-click the tenant backup set, point to All Tasks, and then click Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore dialog box appears.

  3. On the Time Range tab, select Latest Backup and click View Content.

  4. From the Browse window, select the data to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

    The Restore Options appears.

  5. On the General tab, select the restore options:

    1. From the Destination Client list, select the client that the software uses for the restore operation.

    2. From the Destination Instance list, select the instance that the software uses for the restore operation.

    3. Choose the type of restore that you want to perform:

Recover the database to the most recent state
      1. Select Recover Database To.

      2. Select Most Recent State.

      Recover to a point-in-time
      1. Select Recover Database To.

      2. Select Point In Time.

      3. Select the date and time.

Note: If the time zone is different on the CommServe computer and client, in the Time Zone box, select the client computer time zone.

      Recover only the data

To use this option, you must perform the restore by using a full backup.

If you restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, then you must have the catalog backup available with backint. SAP HANA creates the internal backup ID and the Commvault software displays the value on the Job Details dialog box.

If you restore by specifying the backup prefix, then you do not have to have the catalog backup available with backint. The Commvault software creates the backup prefix by pre-pending the job ID to the backup prefix. For example, JOB_ID_SNAP.

      1. Select Recover data only.

      2. Select the backup to use for the restore:

        • To restore by specifying the backup prefix, in the Backup prefix box, type the backup prefix for the backup that you want to restore.

You can view the backup prefix on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Backup Prefix). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

        • To restore by specifying the internal backup job ID, in the Internal Backup ID box, type the internal backup job ID that you want to restore.

You can view the SAP HANA internal backup job ID on the Job Details dialog box (General tab, Internal Backup ID). For more information, see Viewing Details of a Job.

    4. To verify that all the backups required for the recovery operation are available, select the Check Access check box.

    5. To initialize the log area after the restore, select the Initialize log area check box.

  6. Optional: Restore from a copy precedence.

You can restore from a backup copy when the backup is corrupted.

For more information about modifying the copy precedence of a storage policy copy, see Copy Precedence.

    1. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.

    2. On the Copy Precedence tab, select the Restore from Copy Precedence number check box, and then enter a copy precedence number.

    3. Click OK.

  7. Click OK.
