Setting up Client and MediaAgent Pairing for Data Protection Operations

You can setup pairing between the clients and the MediaAgents for data protection operations. This is beneficial when clients and MediaAgents do not have the Internet to retrieve their geolocation. In such a scenario, you can configure the paring to dedicate specific MediaAgents for data protection operations.

The pairing between the client and the MediaAgent is setup by configuring an identical additional setting on both the clients and the MediaAgents. Setting the identical additional setting does not mean that the nearest MediaAgent is picked for data protection operation.

However, if you want that the MediaAgent that is geographically closest to the client must be selected for running the data protection operation, then you must enable the geolocation based data protection feature by configuring the Allow restore, index restore or backup to pick MediaAgent based on the distance to restore location parameter.

Before You Begin

Ensure that you have the latest Service pack installed on the CommServe.

Procedure

Follow the steps to setup the paring between the client and the MediaAgent.

  1. On the CommServe, set the Prefer MediaAgent having same additional setting as client configuration parameter.

  2. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the <Client Group> or <Client> and <MediaAgent>, and then click Properties.

  3. Click Advanced.

  4. On the Additional Settings tab, in the Name box, enter PreferredMediaAgentGroup.

The Category and Type details are populated automatically.

  5. In the Value box, enter a unique value.

Note: Ensure that the value added in the MediaAgent and the client computer are identical for the data protection operations to work.

    For example:

A client computer CL1 is configured with SP1 storage policy that has DP1 and DP2 data paths configured on MA1 and MA2 MediaAgents respectively.

All the MediaAgents are spread out in varied locations and CL1 client is a roaming client.

If the CL1 client must connect to MA2 MediaAgent for data protection operations, then ensure that the PreferredMediaAgentGroup additional setting on CL1 and MA2 have the same value.

  6. Click OK.

Note

Ensure that you configure the PreferredMediaAgentGroup additional setting on both the client and the MediaAgent.
