Virtualize Me for Linux - Prerequisites

Before you convert a Linux computer into a virtual machine, you must do the following:

1. Set Up a Client Computer

2. Enable 1-Touch on the Client

3. Perform a Backup of the Client Computer

4. Install the Virtual Server Agent

5. Create a Virtualization Client

6. Refresh Hyper-V Hosts or Datacenters

7. Download the Boot CD Image

8. Copy the Boot CD Image

9. User Permissions

10. License Requirements

Set Up a Client Computer

The client computer is the computer that you want to convert into a virtual machine. Follow the steps given below to set up the client computer.

1. Verify that the computer meets the minimum requirements specified in System Requirements.

2. Install the Linux File System Agent on the computer. For more information, refer to UNIX/Linux File System Agent Deployment.

Note: Upgrade your client computer to the current Commvault version. Virtualize Me for Linux will not work if your CommServe is upgraded and the client is still at an older version.

Enable 1-Touch on the Client

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Client Computers >client > File System > defaultBackupSet.

2. In the right pane, right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

   Important: You must use the default subclient to perform 1-Touch backup.

3. In the SubclientProperties dialog box, click Advanced.

4. In the Advanced SubclientProperties dialog box, on the 1-Touch Recovery tab, select the 1-Touch Recovery check box.

5. Click OK.

Perform a Backup of the Client Computer

Follow these steps to perform 1-Touch backup on the client computer:

1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Client Computers >client > File System > defaultBackupSet.

2. In the right pane, right-click the default subclient and then click Properties.

3. In the Subclient Properties dialog box, specify the following properties:

   1. On the Content tab, click Browse,toselect the root directory, and then click Add.

      Note: As a minimum, set the below system mount points as subclient content for backup:

      • /boot

      • /usr

      • /etc

      • /lib*

      • /var

      • /opt

      • mount_point_where_Commvault_is_installed

   2. On the Storage Device tab, in the Storage Policy list, click a storage policy name to associate with the subclient.

      Tip: To create a new storage policy, click Create Storage Policy and follow the instructions in the storage policy creation wizard.

   3. Click OK.

4. Right-click the default subclient, and then click Backup.

   The Backup Options dialog box appears.

5. In the Select Backup Type area, select Full to perform a full backup.

6. In the Job initiation area, select Immediate to run the job immediately.

7. Click OK.

   You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller. When the backup has completed, the Job Controller displays Completed.

   Once your backup job is complete, you can view the backup job history. For more information, see Job History.

Install the Virtual Server Agent

• Install the Virtual Server Agent for Hyper-V on a standalone Hyper-V server. Verify that the Hyper-V server runs on a physical host. For more information, see Getting Started (Microsoft Hyper-V).

• Install the Virtual Server Agent for VMware on at least one client computer in the CommCell Console. For more information, see Getting Started (VMware).

  Note: The ESX Server must support 64-bit guest operating systems.

Create a Virtualization Client

• To create a new virtualization client for Microsoft Hyper-V, see Creating a Virtualization Client (Microsoft Hyper-V) for instructions.

• To create a new virtualization client for VMware, see Creating a Virtualization Client for VMware for instructions.

Refresh Hyper-V Hosts or Datacenters

• To refresh Hyper-V hosts, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the Hyper-V under the newly created virtual client, and point to All Tasks | Refresh Hyper-V Hosts.

  2. In the Refresh Hyper-V Hosts dialog box, click OK.

• To refresh VMware hosts, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click VMware under the newly created virtual client, and point to All Tasks | Refresh Data centers.

  2. In the Refresh Datacenters dialog box, click OK.

Download the Boot CD Image

DVD04.iso is the Boot CD image for a Linux client. You can download the ISO file from the Cloud Services website.

1. Go to the Commvault Store page on the Cloud Services website.

   On the Commvault Store page, the software media items are displayed.

2. On the left side of the page, under the MEDIA KITS filter, click 1-Touch.

3. Click the Download button next to the software media that you want to download. For a list of available installation media, see Installation Media List.

   For example, to download the 1-Touch ISO application for Linux computers, look for V11 DVD4 (Linux Live CD) with the latest service pack.

Copy the Boot CD Image

Copy the boot CD image to one of the ESX servers in the vCenter, or a Hyper-V server, based on your requirements.

1. Verify the connectivity between the CommServe and the vCenter or the Hyper-V server in which you want to create the virtual machine.

2. Copy the ISO file of the boot CD Image to any datastore on the ESX server or the Hyper-V server in which you want to create the virtual machine.

User Permissions
