Adding an Azure Hypervisor

Add an Azure hypervisor to support data protection operations for all virtual machines hosted or managed by the hypervisor.

Deprecated

For Feature Release 24 and earlier versions, existing Virtualization Azure Classic Deployment Model configurations will continue to function as defined.

For Feature Release 25 and more recent versions:

  • Existing Virtualization Azure Classic Deployment Model configurations will not function as defined.

New Virtualization Azure Classic Deployment Model configurations are not supported.

Before You Begin

For Azure Resource Manager, the hypervisor represents an application, and there are two methods of deployment:

  • The traditional method with Azure Active Directory where you must set up the application and tenant. With this option, during hypervisor configuration, you must provide the following information:

    • Subscription ID

    • Tenant ID

    • Application ID and password

    To complete this type of deployment, refer to Setting Up an Application and Tenant for Azure Resource Manager.

  • Managed Identity authentication with Azure Active Directory. This is a more secure method of deployment. Using this method ensures that your Azure subscription is accessed only from authorized Managed Identity-enabled virtual machines. In addition, the process of adding an Azure hypervisor is more simplified; you will only need the Subscription ID, you will not need the Tenant ID, Application ID and Application Password information.

    To complete this type of deployment, refer to Setting Up Managed Identity Authentication for Azure Resource Manager.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click Add hypervisor.

  3. From the Select vendor list, select Microsoft Azure.

  4. In the Hypervisor name box, enter a descriptive name for the hypervisor.

  5. Enter the host or the account information for traditional authentication or managed identity authentication:

    • For the traditional authentication method of deployment, enter the following information:

      • Subscription ID: Enter the subscription ID for the Azure account.

      • Tenant ID: Enter the tenant ID associated with the Azure account.

      • Application ID: Enter the application ID associated with the tenant.

      • Application password: Enter the password for the application.

    • For the managed identity authentication method of deployment, configure the following settings:

      • Connect using managed identities for Azure resources: Move the toggle key to the right.

      • Subscription ID: Enter the subscription ID for the Azure account.

  6. From the Access node list, select an access node that was previously deployed.

    The VSA access node must be an Azure virtual machine in the region that you want to back up.

    Note

    If you configure this hypervisor to use managed identity authentication, select only the Azure access nodes that are configured to use managed identity authentication so that backup and restore operations will be successful.

  7. Click Save.
