Copy data management helps you administer active copies of production data. It reduces the amount of primary storage needed and the time taken for making copies. A single copy of production data is captured and used for all copy provisioning purposes. It continuously captures incremental change data from the production database, running in forever-incremental mode to make backup operations faster. A self-service console makes it easy to provide secure copies.
You can use the same backup for copy data management, backup, and recovery operations, including the following:
-
Creating development or test copies
-
Performing in-place partial restores
-
Performing out-of-place restores for disaster recovery
-
Performing actual disaster recovery operations
Commvault Copy Data Management uses the following methods, based on the available storage capabilities:
-
Array snapshot technology, making snapshot copies from primary storage using the hardware and software capabilities of the array.
-
Snapshot copies made from secondary storage, such as a company's own storage or the Commvault Hybrid File Store. This solution is agnostic to the type of secondary storage that is used.
-
Hedvig snapshot technology using Distributed Storage. This solution integrates the Hedvig storage solution, is agnostic to the type of primary storage used, has high performance, and is easily scalable.
Copy Data Management Using Array Snapshots or Snapshot Copies Made from Secondary Storage
You can use array snapshot technology or snapshot copies made from secondary storage for Copy Data Management, with the following databases:
Copy Data Management Using Distributed Storage
You can use Distributed Storage as a storage target for database Copy Data Management. For more information, see Copy Data Management Using Distributed Storage.
Copy Data Management Using Hybrid File Store
You can use Hybrid File Store (HFS) shares to access Commvault Content Store for Copy Data Management. For more information, see Access Commvault Storage Using NFS or SMB Protocols.
