Create Air Gap Protect storage for a backup copy

Air Gap Protect storage isolates your backup data in a secure, time-based container that prevents unauthorized access and deletion. You create storage for a specific copy of a backup, which is specified in a backup plan.

When you create Air Gap Protect storage, the storage has a single container (available on the Backup locations tab for the storage). When the container reaches 2 PB, Commvault marks it as Full and creates a new container.

Location (region) requirements

The storage and MediaAgents must be in the same location (region).

Go to the backup plan

In Commvault SaaS and Commvault software, you can create storage from a backup plan using the following steps. In Commvault software, you can also create storage by going to Storage in the Command Center navigation pane. To create a backup plan, see Create backup plans and backup storage.

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Plans.

  2. Click the backup plan.

Create the backup copy and storage

  1. On the Storage policies tab, expand Default.

  2. For Copies, click Add, and then select Copy.

    What's a "copy"?

Basically, a "copy" is a backup and where the backup is stored. The first copy is often called the "primary copy", and you can specify additional copies. For example, you might specify a copy to backup storage in a different region than the primary copy.

  3. Specify details for the copy, click the add button for storage, and then select Air Gap Protect.

  4. Enter a name for the storage.

  5. Select the storage type, class, and location (region).

Need help choosing a storage class?
    • Frequent access: Use for backups that need regular or rapid restores, such as databases and VMs.
    • Infrequent access: Use for backups that are rarely restored (a 30-day minimum is required), such as compliance archives and historical project data.
  6. For MediaAgent and DDB MediaAgent, select or create a backup gateway that's in the same location (region) you selected for the storage.

  7. Click Save.
