Commvault Grid

Formerly Commvault HyperScale X

Commvault Grid is a scale-out data protection platform that combines distributed storage, integrated data management, and cyber resilience capabilities into a unified solution. The platform is designed to simplify backup, recovery, and long-term data management across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid cloud environments.

Commvault Grid enables organizations to protect modern workloads at scale while reducing infrastructure complexity and operational overhead. The platform integrates storage, deduplication, resiliency, and security into a single architecture that can scale incrementally as data grows.

Commvault Grid runs on VaultOS™, Commvault’s hardened Linux operating system. VaultOS™ provides a secure and maintained foundation for the Commvault Storage platform with built-in security controls, ransomware protection, and lifecycle management capabilities.

Key Capabilities

Commvault Grid includes the following core capabilities:

Flexible Workload Protection

Commvault Grid supports protection for a wide range of workloads, including: virtual machines, containers, databases, file systems, NAS workloads, cloud workloads and enterprise applications.

Scale-Out Architecture

Commvault Grid uses a distributed scale-out architecture that enables seamless expansion as storage and performance requirements grow.

The platform supports:

  • Incremental node expansion
  • Non-disruptive scaling
  • Large-scale storage pool growth

Integrated Security

Commvault Grid includes multiple built-in security mechanisms designed to protect backup infrastructure and recovery data.

Security capabilities include:

  • Ransomware protection
  • Immutable storage protection
  • Compliance Lock
  • Root access controls
  • OS hardening
  • Secure network segmentation
  • Air Gap support
  • Encrypted communications

Unified Management

Commvault Grid provides centralized management for storage pools, nodes, networking, and operational workflows through a unified interface.

Architecture Overview

Commvault Grid is built on a distributed software-defined storage architecture that combines storage resources, compute resources, and data protection services across all nodes in the cluster.

The platform distributes data and metadata across the cluster to improve scalability, availability, and fault tolerance.

Storage pools can be expanded by adding individual nodes or multi-node increments.

Commvault Grid provides resiliency through a combination of distributed architecture, redundant components, and fault-tolerant storage design.

Commvault Grid uses erasure coding (4+2) as the primary data protection mechanism.

Deployment Models

Commvault Grid Appliance

Commvault Grid Appliance is delivered pre-imaged with Commvault Grid software.

Commvault provides end-to-end support for both hardware and software.

Commvault Grid Reference Architecture

Commvault Grid Reference Architecture uses validated server platforms and deployment designs.

Commvault provides support for the Commvault Grid software stack, while hardware support is provided by the server vendor.

Air Gap and Isolated Recovery

Commvault Grid supports Air Gap deployments that isolate backup copies from the production environment outside controlled replication windows.

Commvault Grid Lifecycle

A typical Commvault Grid deployment follows the following lifecycle:

  1. Plan the deployment architecture and procure hardware
  2. Deploy and configure Commvault Grid Nodes
  3. Protect workloads
  4. Scale and manage the platform
  5. Perform recovery and cyber recovery operations

The Commvault Grid documentation is organized around this operational lifecycle to simplify deployment, administration, and recovery workflows.
