Restore data for Hyper-V VMs

Restore full VMs, guest files and folders, or virtual disk files from Hyper-V backups.

Before you begin

If the source VM uses Hyper-V Replica, disable replication before performing an in-place restore, and then re-enable replication after the restore completes.

Restore full VM in-place

Restore a complete VM to its original location.

  1. Navigate to Protect > Virtualization > VM groups tab.

  2. Select the VM and click the action button.

  3. Click Restore.

  4. Click Full virtual machine.

  5. Optionally specify the MediaAgent and source copy.

  6. Select the VMs to restore and click Restore.

  7. On the Restore options page:

    • For Restore type, select In place.

    • Select automatic or a specific access node.

    • Configure restore options:

      Power on VMs after restore: Start VMs automatically after restore completes.

      Unconditionally overwrite: Replace existing VMs without prompting.

      Register VMs with failover cluster: Register restored VMs with the cluster.

      Restore virtual machine using live recovery: Start the VM before full restore completes.

  8. Click Submit.

Restore full VM out-of-place

Restore a complete VM to a different location, hypervisor, or platform.

  1. Navigate to Protect > Virtualization > VM groups tab.

  2. Select the VM and click the action button.

  3. Click Restore.

  4. Click Full virtual machine.

  5. Optionally specify the MediaAgent and source copy.

  6. Select the VMs to restore and click Restore.

  7. On the Restore options page:

    • For Restore type, select Out of place.

    • For Destination, select the destination platform:

      Hyper-V: Restore to same or different Hyper-V infrastructure.

      VMware: Restore to VMware vSphere.

      AWS: Restore to AWS EC2.

      Azure: Restore to Microsoft Azure.

      Azure Stack: Restore to Azure Stack.

    • Select the destination hypervisor or client.

    • Select automatic or a specific access node.

    • Configure VM details:

      Enter a display name for the restored VM.

      Select the destination host, folder, and network adapter.

      Optionally customize IP settings (static IP or DHCP).

    • Configure restore options as needed (power on, overwrite, register with cluster, live recovery, disk provisioning).

  8. Click Submit.

Restore guest files and folders

Restore individual files and folders from VM backups.

  1. Navigate to Protect > Virtualization > VM groups tab.

  2. Select the VM group and click the action button.

  3. Click Restore.

  4. Select Guest files.

  5. Optionally change the source (live browse, MediaAgent, copy).

  6. Browse the backup and select files or folders to restore.

  7. Click Restore.

  8. Choose the restore destination:

    Source VM: Restore to the original VM.

    Another VM: Restore to a different VM (provide VM credentials).

    Guest agent: Restore to a file system agent location.

  9. Specify the destination path.

  10. Choose whether to overwrite existing files.

  11. Click Submit.

Requirements for restoring to another VM

  • Destination VM must be Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 or later

  • Latest Hyper-V Integration Services must be installed on destination VM

Restore virtual disk files

Restore VHD, VHDX, or VHDS virtual disk files.

  1. Navigate to Protect > Virtualization > VM groups tab.

  2. Select the VM and click the action button.

  3. Click Restore.

  4. Click Disk files.

  5. Select the disk files to restore.

  6. Specify the destination path.

  7. Click Submit.
