Volume Level Restores for the SQL Server

When restoring volume-level backups out of place, block-level database backup operations use the SQL VSS Writer, and all applicable VSS restore restrictions apply.

Supported Restore Types

Volume-Level Restores

  • The entire destination volume is overwritten.

  • It is recommended to select all databases from the same protected volume to ensure database handles are properly closed.

  • For out-of-place restores, the destination volume must be the same size or larger than the source volume.

For more information see, Restoring Volumes at the Block-Level Out of Place.

File-Based Database Restores

  • Supports individual database restores.

  • The volume is not overwritten.

For more information see, Restores for SQL Server.

Instant Clones

  • Provides rapid access to data using cloned volumes.

For more information see, Instant Clones for SQL Server.
