When restoring volume-level backups out of place, block-level database backup operations use the SQL VSS Writer, and all applicable VSS restore restrictions apply.
Supported Restore Types
Volume-Level Restores

The entire destination volume is overwritten.

It is recommended to select all databases from the same protected volume to ensure database handles are properly closed.

For out-of-place restores, the destination volume must be the same size or larger than the source volume.
