Best Practices for VTL Host Storage Pools

Use the following guidelines to create the first storage pool in the VTL host:

  • The first pool is considered as the Default pool which holds the deduplication tables for the other pools in the associated VTL host. It is recommended to use the Default pool exclusively for the deduplication tables.

  • Recommended to name this first Storage Pool as Default for easy identification.

  • The default pool should be a local disk.

  • Select the Enable Dedupe Metadata option for this pool.

  • Select the Enable Deduplication option for this pool. (This option is enabled by default.)

    Note

The first disk of ANY storage pool is the Master disk of the pool and can only be Replaced and cannot be Migrated to another disk.

Use the following guidelines to create the second (or subsequent) pools.

  • Second Storage Pool, or any additional pool, should be used for data (VTL instances).

  • Disks added to these pools can be local disks or FC luns.

  • Disable the Enable Dedupe Metadata option for this pool.

  • Select the Enable Deduplication option for these pools. (This option is enabled by default.)

  • Select the iSeries Backup option for IBM iSeries hosts. See Also: Best Practices for IBM iSeries.
