Overview
This section contains guidelines and procedures for upgrading the operating system or applications on a computer with CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine, and agent software. No new or additional licenses are required when upgrading the operation system or application.
Operating system upgrades are only supported when upgrading from one version of an operating system to a different version of the same operating system (for example, Solaris 8 to Solaris 9).
The following two methods of upgrading are supported:
-
Seamless Upgrade. For the CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine, Virtual Server Agent, and Macintosh agents, it is not necessary to first uninstall the software. For other agents, you must uninstall the agent software, upgrade the operating system, and then re-install the agent software.
-
Full OS Replacement. This involves performing a clean install of a new version of the operating system, re-installing any application software, and then re-installing the CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine and agent software if applicable.
Whichever upgrade path you select, all backup data and histories will be preserved and available after the upgrade.
When performing a full operating system replacement, the client computer must be configured to have the CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine, and client software re-installed to the same location, and must have the same Fully Qualified Domain Name or short domain name, the same partitions, the same disk drive format (for example, FAT, NTFS), and the same IP configuration as previously.
Warning
If it is necessary to remove agent software to facilitate an operating system or application upgrade, do not delete the icon for the agent from the CommCell Console, or all associated backed up data will be lost.
Refer to the following topics to uninstall and install the CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine, and agent software:
Use the following strategy to upgrade the operating system software:
-
Identify the computers you want to upgrade and the CommCell components installed on each of these computers.
-
Choose the type of upgrade procedure you want to use on each computer: seamless or full replacement.
-
CommServe, MediaAgent, Web Server, Workflow Engine, and client computers can be upgraded in any order.
Notes on OS and Application Upgrades
Notes are provided in the table below for each component where upgrade of the operating system or application software is supported.

Notes |
Active Directory |
Active Directory is part of the Windows operating system. See "Microsoft Windows File Systems", below. |
DB2 |
Seamless upgrade is supported for all DB2 versions listed in System Requirements - DB2 agent. After upgrading DB2, if the DB2 installation path is different, update the DB2 installation path on the CommCell Console. For more information, see Changing the DB2 Home Directory. After upgrading the version of DB2, the instance properties will continue to reflect the old version of DB2 until the first backup is run. |
Informix |
Before upgrading the Informix software, the Informix agent must be uninstalled. After the Informix software is upgraded, reinstall the Informix agent. After upgrading the version of Informix, the instance properties will continue to reflect the old version of Informix until the first backup is run. |
IBM Notes / IBM Domino |
Seamless Upgrade is supported for all IBM Domino versions listed in System Requirements - IBM Notes/IBM Domino agents. |
Macintosh File System |
Seamless Upgrade is supported for all Mac OS X versions listed in System Requirements - Macintosh File System agent. For instructions, see Macintosh File System - Upgrade the Operating System. |
Microsoft Exchange Server |
Before upgrading the Microsoft Exchange 2000 application to Exchange 2003, the Exchange agents must be uninstalled. After the Microsoft Exchange 2000 application is upgraded, install the Exchange 2003 agents. |
Microsoft SharePoint Server |
Seamless upgrade is supported for SharePoint Server Agent. For SharePoint Database
|
Microsoft SQL Server |
Seamless upgrade is supported for all SQL Server versions listed in System Requirements - Microsoft SQL Server agent. After upgrading the version of SQL Server, the instance properties will continue to reflect the old version of SQL until the first backup is run. |
Microsoft Windows File Systems |
When upgrading from one version of Microsoft Windows to another version listed in System Requirements - Microsoft Windows File System agent, you must uninstall all agent software, upgrade the OS, then reinstall the agent software. For instructions, see Windows File System - Upgrade the Operating System. |
MySQL |
After upgrading the MySQL Server to a new version, the Instance Properties (General) tab for the MySQL agent instance will continue to reflect the previous database version until the first backup is run. |
NAS |
Seamless upgrade is supported for all NAS file server OS versions listed in System Requirements. After upgrading the NAS file server OS, the database will continue to reflect the previous OS version until the first backup is run, or a detect is performed. |
OES File System |
The OES File System cannot be upgraded at this time. |
Oracle |
After upgrading the Oracle database to a new version, the Instance Properties (General) tab for the Oracleagent instance will continue to reflect the previous database version until the first backup is run. |
Oracle RAC |
|
SAP for Oracle |
If you want to upgrade both Oracle and SAP, be sure to upgrade the Oracle application software first and then the SAP application software. To upgrade the Oracle application software:
|
SAP HANA |
Before you plan to upgrade HANA single database container to HANA 2.0, you must verify that all in-place and Database Copy restore operations are completed. After you upgrade to HANA2.0, existing backup schedules are no longer supported. The first backup job that is run after upgrade dissociates the schedules from backup sets that existed before upgrade, automatically discovers HANA 2.0, and then fails. The reason for failed job is shown with a JPR as follows: Description: SAP HANA Error [Multi-tenant configuration is detected. But the backup is run for SingleDB. Please review the backups/schedules and rerun the job after the tenant databases are discovered.]. The old HANA 1.0 GUI subclients are deleted and the Data Aging rules of the deleted subclients apply to the existing HANA 1.0 backups. You must recreate the backup schedules for the upgraded version on the newly configured backup sets. After you upgrade to HANA 2.0, to restore HANA 1.0 databases, use the BACKINT interface on SAP HANA studio. |
Sybase |
Seamless upgrade is supported for all Sybase versions listed in System Requirements - Sybase agent. After upgrading Sybase, it is recommended that you relink the instances. After upgrading the version of Sybase, the instance properties will continue to reflect the old version of Sybase until the first backup is run. |
