Attaching a Volume to a New Amazon EC2 Instance

From an Amazon EC2 instance backup, you can restore an instance volume and attach the volume to a new instance that is created by the restore operation.

As part of the restore, you can specify a connection to the Amazon EC2 web service or to an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).

Important

The Commvault software does not restore Amazon EBS gp3 IOPS values or throughput values. Default values are set by the restore operation. You can modify the default values after the restore is complete. The default IOPS value is 3000. The default throughput value is 125MB/s.

Prerequisites

If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button, and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  3. To restore individual volumes and attach the volumes to an existing instance, click Attach volume.

    The Restore page appears.

  4. To select a specific source copy and/or MediaAgent for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

By default, the software automatically selects the MediaAgent and source copy as follows:

    • MediaAgent: The software uses the MediaAgent that performed the backup.

    • Source copy: By default, the software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.

    Potential for egress charges

Restoring from a copy that is outside the destination Region incurs egress charges. For more information, see Data Transfer on the Amazon EC2 On-Demand Pricing page in the AWS documentation.

For more information, see MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.

  5. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

The Restore options dialog box appears.

  6. From the Destination hypervisor list, select the AWS account to create the new instance in.

  7. To use a different VSA access node to perform the restore, from the Access node list, select another access node.

  8. In the Instance name box, enter a name for the instance.

  9. To specify a different name for the restored volume, under Volume options, in the Volume name box, enter the name.

  10. Under Amazon cloud options, specify the following:

    • Availability zone: Select the destination zone for the instance.

    • AMI selection: Select the Amazon Machine Image that you want to use to specify the software configuration for the instance.

Only Private AMIs are listed. To restore using a Marketplace AMI, enter the AMI ID.

    • Instance type: To specify the available CPU cores and memory for the instance, select the instance type.

    • Network: Select an existing Amazon EC2 or Amazon VPC network connection or create a new network connection, and then click OK:

      • To select an existing network connection for the restored instances, click Browse, and in the Select network settings dialog box, select the network you want to use for the new instance.

      • To create a new network connection, click Browse, and in the Select network settings dialog box, select New Network Interface.

The Auto Select Security Group toggle key becomes available.

      • Auto select security group: To turn off auto selection, specify a security group, move this toggle key to the left, and from the Security groups list, select a security group for the specified network.

  11. To start the instance automatically after the restore operation completes, select the Power on instance after restore check box.

  12. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

  13. Click Submit.
