Monitoring the Storage Utilization for HyperScale X Nodes

When the utilization of your HyperScale storage approaches 90%, problems with write operations to the storage begin to occur. The Commvault software sends alerts to the administrators at various stages of storage utilization with appropriate recommendations. The software also takes proactive actions to prevent cluster failure.

For a storage pool owned by a company, the software sends alerts to the members of tenant admin user group. For a storage pool not owned by any company, the software sends alerts to the members of CommCell admin user group.

The following are common recommendations to maintain enough free space in your HyperScale storage:

The alerts function as follow:

Storage Utlization

Alert

70% storage utilization and the storage is expected to be full in next 6 months

You receive weekly alerts.
To maintain enough free space, perform a space reclamation operation. If you already performed a space reclamation job in the past 15 days, then you need to add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster.

80% storage utilization

You receive daily alerts to increase storage capacity.

You are notified that write operations to the storage pool, such as backup, auxiliary copy and synthetic full are affected when storage utilization surpasses 85%.

To maintain enough free space, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster.

85% storage utilization

You receive daily alerts that the storage pool will be read only starting next Tuesday. The software automatically stops write operations to the storage pool starting next Tuesday.

To extend write operations to the storage pool for one more week, acknowledge the risk through the link that you receive in the alert. You can extend write operations until the storage utilization reaches 90%.

To allow data protection operations beyond best practice recommendations, use the Allow backups action that is available in the details page of the storage pool (Overview tab) that you are receiving alerts for.

To maintain enough free space, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster.

90% storage utilization

You receive a one-time alert that the storage pool is made read only and you cannot perform write operations to the storage pool.

You cannot extend the timeline for write operations anymore.

To resume the write operations, perform space reclamation and add additional nodes to expand the HyperScale cluster.

For a CommCell environment that was upgraded from an earlier release (on which the feature was not enabled) to Commvault Platform Release 2024E, the software provides a grace period of 6 weeks from the time of upgrade. During the 6 weeks, you receive alerts. However, the software does not take any action at 85% or 90% until after the 6 weeks are complete.
