Moving a Mount Path

A device can contain one or more mount paths. Using the move mount path operation, you can move mount paths from one location to another new location or you can consolidate the mount path with an existing device.

Understanding Device and Mount Path

Disk storage, whether individual hard disks or RAID arrays, is logically divided into devices. A device can include a part or all of the total disk storage space available on the file system.

To perform write and read operations of backup data, the Commvault software creates unique folders on a device with folder name in the format of randomstring_date_time. The folders are referred as mount paths. A device can contain one or more mount paths.

Understanding Consolidated Mount Path

You can move mount paths from a device to another existing device in the same library. After the move, the mount path on the destination device is referred as a consolidated mount path.

Types of Move Mount Path Operations

You can perform the following move operations:

  • Move to an existing device: Move a mount path on a device to another existing device on the same library to consolidate the mount paths. Before the move, two mount paths that are present on a disk storage report the same storage space as the disk storage which causes inaccurate storage space reporting. With the move, you can improve accuracy in reporting, alerting, and billing of storage space of a library.

For example, D drive is present on a MediaAgent with a total space of 50TB and available free space of 25TB. If you configure two mount paths in two different device folders on the D drive, then both the mount paths report the same total space and available free space. Due to this, the storage space for the library that hosts the mount paths is inaccurately reported as total space of 100TB and available free space of 50TB. To avoid inaccurate reporting, move either of these mount paths to another device folder in the same library to merge into a consolidated mount path.

You can also move in the following cases:

    • To improve storage management of a library, you can move mount path to an existing device that has more storage capacity or faster disk media on the same MediaAgent or another MediaAgent.

    • To decommission the storage hardware of the source mount path

  • Move to new location: Move a mount path to another location that has more storage capacity or faster disk media on the same MediaAgent or another MediaAgent. The destination device can be a local path or a network path.

    Note

Move mount path operation for migrated (CCM) libraries/paths is not supported.
