Moving a Mount Path to an Existing Device

You can move a mount path to an existing device on the same library. The destination device can be a local path or a network path. When you move a mount path to an existing device, the software consolidates the mount path with the destination device and the device represents a single mount path.

Before the move, two mount paths that are present on a disk storage report the same storage space as the disk storage which causes inaccurate storage space reporting. With the move, you can improve accuracy in reporting, alerting, and billing of storage space of a library.

For example, D drive is present on a MediaAgent with a total space of 50TB and available free space of 25TB. If you configure two mount paths in two different device folders on the D drive, then both the mount paths report the same total space and available free space. Due to this, the storage space for the library that hosts the mount paths is inaccurately reported as total space of 100TB and available free space of 50TB. To avoid inaccurate reporting, move either of these mounts to another device folder in the same library to merge into a consolidated mount path.

You can also move in the following cases:

  • To improve storage management of a library, you can move mount path to an existing device that has more storage capacity or faster disk media on the same MediaAgent or another MediaAgent.

  • To decommission the storage hardware of the source mount path

Operation to move a mount path to an existing device involves the following steps:

  • Disables the pruning of data present on the mount path.

  • Validates the source mount path folder and the destination device.

  • During phase 1, the software copies the full volumes from the source mount path folder to the destination device. The software allows the operations like backup, restore, auxiliary copy, data verification, synthetic full and deduplication database (DDB) reconstruction.

    Note

After phase 1, the job selects the Disable mount path for new data option that is available in the Mount Path Properties -Allocation Policy dialog box. Do not change the option when the move mount path operation is in progress. The job automatically clears the option after completion of the move mount path operation.

  • During phase 2, the software suspends backup and other operations for the source mount path and copies the active volumes from the source mount path folder to the destination device.

  • Clears the Disable mount path for new data option.

  • Enables the pruning of data.

  • Resumes backup and other operations that are pending.

Notes

  • If the source mount path is a consolidated mount path, the software initiates multiple move mount path operations to move each mount path in the consolidated mount path.

  • Move mount path operation performs checksum verification of the data to ensure data integrity. As a result, the operation may be slower than the Windows file copy operation.

  • When you move a mount path between two Linux MediaAgents, the move mount path operation does not support drill hole capability. If you move a mount path with drill hole capability, the mount path will consume more space after the move.

  • Any mount paths that failed to move will remain on the source device.

  • If you are using storage pools, do NOT add any mount path shares while the Move Mount Path job is in progress. Otherwise, you will end up with duplicate mount path shares.

Before You Begin

  • Review the Move Mount Path - Support page.

  • Ensure that the destination device is not a sub folder under the source mount path folder.

  • Ensure that the destination device has at least 5% more free space than the space consumed by the source mount path.

  • Ensure that the source mount path has backup data.

  • Ensure that the source MediaAgent and the destination MediaAgent are online and accessible.

  • To move a mount path in an automated disk library, you must disable the automated mount path detection. For instructions, see Disabling Automated Mount Path Detection.

  • The user must have the Library Management permission or Library Administration permission on the library that hosts the mount path.

  • The Commvault services must be up and running on the source MediaAgent until the move mount path operation is complete.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources > Libraries > library.

  2. Right-click the mount path that you want to move, and then click Move Mount Path.

The Move Mount Path dialog box appears.

  3. From Select Source MediaAgent list, select the source MediaAgent.

For a mount path shared between MediaAgents, the shared MediaAgents appear in the list.

  4. Under Destination Path, select Move to existing device option.

  5. From the MediaAgent list, select the MediaAgent that hosts the device.

  6. From the Destination Device list, select the device to which you want to move the mount paths.

  7. Click OK.

You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller.

Result

  • After the completion of a move mount path job, the space on the source mount path is freed up after 24 hours (one day). To modify the time to keep the files on the source mount path, configure the Minutes to keep mount path files on source location after successful move mount path job parameter in the Media Management Configuration dialog box.

  • The destination device with consolidated mount path appears as a single mount path under the library.

  • If the mount path move job fails or is killed, you must manually clean the data that was copied to the destination mount path.

What to Do Next

  • Verify that the destination device is online and accessible after the move.

    Note

The new mount path may appear offline if the source mount path has run out of disk space prior to move mount path operation. To see the new mount path online, you must wait until the next disk space update.

  • Perform a disaster recovery backup. For instructions, see Performing a Disaster Recovery Backup.
