The backup operation for VMware is comprised of the following phases.
-
Content Discovery
VMware virtual machines (VM) are identified within the VM Group's defined criteria.
-
Content Management
The CommServe server generates the VM list, and then sends it to the coordinating proxy for data protection.
-
Content Backup and Transport
The VSAs perform the backup of the designated content, and then transfer the data to backup media per the defined data transport mode.
The data transport modes available for VMware are:
-
HotAdd Transport (Hot Addition of Disks)
-
NAS (Network Attached Storage)
-
NBD and NBDSSL (Network Block Device)
-
SAN (Storage Area Network)
-
