Ad-hoc backups are on-demand backups that allow subclient content to be specified as an external input when starting a backup operation. When you start an ad-hoc backup from the command line, you can specify the content in a directive file.
Ad-hoc backups always run as full backup jobs on a dedicated subclient for ad-hoc backups. Ad-hoc backups run as incremental backup jobs on a non-dedicated subclient.
Synthetic full backup jobs carry forward the ad-hoc backup data only if the data is not part of the subclient used to perform ad-hoc jobs.
You can run synthetic full backup jobs to meet the retention criteria.
Data Scan
Ad-hoc job always runs a full scan operation. It will back up all the files in the directive file.
Commits and Failed Items
-
If the job before the ad-hoc job was committed, then the remaining un-committed data will be backed up in next regular job, not by the ad-hoc job. For information on committing a backup job when it is terminated, see Killing a Job in the Job Controller.
-
Commit is not supported for ad-hoc jobs. Killing an ad-hoc job does not convert it to commit, instead the job is killed.
-
Failed items from regular jobs are picked by the next regular backup and such items will not be handled by an ad-hoc job. Failed items from ad-hoc jobs are not picked up by either ad-hoc or regular job.
Unsupported Components
IntelliSnap backups.
Considerations
-
Supported on Indexing V2 client computers.
-
The latest browse operation shows items only for the current cycle. Once you run a full backup job on the subclient, the previous ad-hoc items will not be visible in the latest browse operation. Only point-in-time or time range browse operations show the ad-hoc items.
-
If the data in the ad-hoc job overlaps with that of the regular subclient, then the deleted items retention will apply for the ad-hoc data also.
