Indexing is the process of creating a file (called an index or catalog) containing all of the metadata that Commvault needs to be able to locate and perform operations on the data that it backs up (such as browse, analytics, and reporting). Just as the data is backed up to a storage library, the index itself is also backed up to a storage library.
There are two different versions of indexing for Commvault, each with their own distinct processes for creating, storing, and backing up the index:
-
Indexing Version 1, the original Commvault indexing architecture.
-
Indexing Version 2, the next-generation version of Commvault indexing.
