A name management operation is the process of updating the name of a CommServe, MediaAgent, or client. There are two types of names used by the software that you can:
-
Client Name: The name of the client that is registered on the client's operating system and uniquely identifies the client in the CommCell environment. For more information, see Client Name.
-
Display Name: The name that is used to label a client in the software management consoles. For more information, see Display Name.
You can view both the client name and display name for a client from the client computer properties dialog box in the CommCell Console.
The following name management operations enable you to update the client, display, or domain name as required:
-
Update Domain Name: If you move one or more clients to a different domain or if the current domain is renamed, you must specify the new domain name in the CommCell environment.
-
Update CommServe Display Name: The display name is the name of the client that is displayed in the software management consoles, such as the CommCell Console, Command Center, and Web Console. You can have more than one client in your CommCell environment with the same display name, but you cannot have two clients with the same client name.
By default, the display name is the same as the client name. If you want to change the display name (for example, to support multiple tenants with identical computer names), you may do so from the CommCell Console.
-
Update CommServe for Clients (use this option post migration): During a CommCell Migration, the clients and MediaAgents are moved from one CommCell to another. After the migration you must update all clients and MediaAgents with the new CommServe name.
-
Update CommServe for Clients (use this option after DR restore): When you move or restore the CommServe database to a new computer that uses a name that is different from the original CommServe computer, you must inform the clients about the new CommServe name.
-
Update CommServe hostname on CommServe and Remote clients: When you change the name of the computer where the CommServe resides, you need to notify the CommServe database and client computers about the new computer name because it also affects the CommServe host name. Rename the CommServe computer from the CommCell Console if you want to update the computer name without reinstalling the CommServe software.
