Operating Instances in the License Summary Report

The Operating Instances view of the License Summary Report lists the current license usage and each client computer that is covered by the Operating Instances license in the CommCell environment.

To view this report, in the License Summary Report, in the Commvault Complete OI Licenses table under License, click Operating Instances.

Clients that consume the following license types are included in the OI calculation:

  • Application Class 1

  • Application Class 3

  • Application Class 2

  • Each configured NAS pseudo-client (whether a physical IP or a logical subsystem, such as an SVM)

  • Laptop and desktop

  • NDMP

  • OpenStack pseudo clients

  • Server file system

The OI calculation excludes the following:

  • CommServe Disaster Recovery (DR) nodes

  • Jobs on CommServe DR nodes from capacity

  • Cluster pseudo clients:

    • Exchange Database Availability Group (DAG)

    • SQL Always On Availability Groups (AG)

    • Oracle RAC

    • SAP HANA

    • DB2

    • MongoDB

    • Greenplum

    • Cassandra

For backup operations that include cluster clients, the system makes the following checks:

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are all physical machines, the system checks for the OI license.

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are all virtual machines, the system checks for the VOI or OI license.

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are mixed (some nodes are on a physical server, and some nodes are on a virtual machine), the system checks for the OI license.

Then, the cluster backup job proceeds as follows:

  • If the needed license is not present, then the cluster backup job is blocked.

  • If the needed license is present and within usage, the cluster backup job is allowed to run.

After an OI/VOI license is applied to the CommCell environment, all related jobs are removed from the capacity calculation. As a result, the License Summary report does not display any jobs for the client computers that consumed OI/VOI licenses. To view the jobs that were removed from the capacity calculation, see the Current OI Usage Excluded From Capacity Because of OI License table or the Virtual Operating Instances Current Usage Details table.

Only some of the columns appear by default. You can view any additional columns by using the Columns setting.

Repositories Backed Up Using DevOps Apps

If the virtual operating instance (VOI) license is applied in a CommServe environment (count logic: 1 VOI per repository), then repositories that are backed up using DevOps apps (Github and Azure DevOps) are counted towards the VOI license. If the CommServe environment is an operating-instance-only environment, then the repositories are counted under the operating instance (OI) license using the borrow logic. If OI or VOI licenses are not present, then the repositories are counted under the capacity calculation.

Current Operating Instances

This table lists each client computer that is counted in the Operating Instances license.

Column

Description

Client ID

The ID of the client computer.

Client

The client computer.

Company ID

The ID of the company.

If the operating instance is not part of a company CommCell environment, then this column contains no data.

Company

The company that owns the operating instance.

If the operating instance is not part of a company CommCell environment, then this column contains no data.

Plan

The plan that is associated with the operating instance and the storage policy.

Current OI Usage Excluded from Capacity Because of OI License

This table displays the size of jobs that run for license types, other than the capacity license, on the operating instances. If there are no other license types purchased, then this table appears blank.
