Virtual Operating Instances in the License Summary Report

The Virtual Operating Instances view of the License Summary Report lists each virtual machine (VM) that is covered by the Virtual Operating Instances license in the CommCell environment. VMs are included in the virtual operating instances calculation, regardless of the hypervisor type. VMs must have the Commvault File System package (not the File System Core package) installed to consume the VOI license.

All Commvault-supported hypervisors are included in the VOI calculation. To view a complete list of supported hypervisors, see Supported Hypervisors.

If you do not have a Protected Virtual Instance license, Kubernetes applications are counted under the VOI license, but status and details about Kubernetes applications appears in the Protected Virtual Instance page in the License Summary Report.

For backup operations that include cluster clients, the system makes the following checks:

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are all physical machines, the system checks for the OI license.

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are all virtual machines, the system checks for the VOI or OI license.

  • If the nodes of the cluster client are mixed (some nodes are on a physical server, and some nodes are on a virtual machine), the system checks for the OI license.

Then, the cluster backup job proceeds as follows:

  • If the needed license is not present, then the cluster backup job is blocked.

  • If the needed license is present and within usage, the cluster backup job is allowed to run.

Repositories Backed Up Using DevOps Apps

If the virtual operating instance (VOI) license is applied in a CommServe environment (count logic: 1 VOI per repository), then repositories that are backed up using DevOps apps (Github and Azure DevOps) are counted towards the VOI license. If the CommServe environment is an operating-instance-only environment, then the repositories are counted under the operating instance (OI) license using the borrow logic. If OI or VOI licenses are not present, then the repositories are counted under the capacity calculation.

Current Virtual Operating Instances Table

This table lists each virtual instance that is counted in the current usage for the Virtual Operating Instances license. Only some of the columns appear by default. You can view any additional columns by using the Columns setting.

Column

Description

ID

The ID of the VM.

Name

The virtual instance.

Company ID

The ID of the company that owns the virtual instance.

If the virtual instance is not part of a company CommCell environment, then this column contains no data.
