Cloning a SQL Database

You can use the cloning feature to create a copy of the database using a full IntelliSnap backup, Application-Aware backup, or a block-level backup for a test environment. The system automatically shuts down the clone database and frees up all resources when the reservation period expires.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, click Solutions > Databases > SQL Server > database.

    The database details page appears.

  2. Determine the backup that you want to clone. Under Backup history, select a date that contains a backup, and then select the restore time.

  3. Click Instant clone.

The Instance clone dialog box appears.

  4. From the Destination server list, select the SQL Server client where the software creates the clone.

  5. From the Destination instance list, select the SQL instance where the software creates the clone.

  6. To change the clone database name, in the Destination database box, type the name of the clone database.

  7. Optional: If you are using an array that does not have cloning capability, then from the Use iSCSI server list, select the client that will act as iSCSI server to mount cloned snapshots.

  8. In the Clone reservation boxes, type the number of days and hours that the software retains the clone environment.

  9. To have the software clean up any existing clone on the destination that has the same database name, regardless of the reservation period, select the Unconditionally overwrite existing database files check box.

  10. Click Submit.

Result

The software creates a clone on the destination server that lasts for the reservation period.
