IntelliSnap Support for Virtualization

The following hypervisors support IntelliSnap backups and restores:

Amazon

You can configure an AWS VM group to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap or backup copy, you can restore full EC2 instances, restore an EBS volume and attach it to an existing EC2 instance, and restore guest files and folders.

Azure

  • You can configure an Azure hypervisor to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap or backup copy, you can restore full virtual machines, restore a disk and attach it to an existing virtual machine, and restore guest files and folders.

This feature is only available for Azure hypervisors created in Service Pack 13 or later.

  • You can backup virtual machines configured with Azure unmanaged and managed disks. From the snap or backup copy of these disks, you can restore full virtual machines and restore guest files and folders.

Azure Stack

  • You can configure an Azure Stack hypervisor to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap or backup copy, you can restore full virtual machines and restore guest files and folders.

This feature is only available for Azure Stack hypervisors created in Service Pack 13 or later.

  • You can backup virtual machines configured with Azure Stack unmanaged and managed disks. From the snap or backup copy of these disks, you can restore full virtual machines and restore guest files and folders.

When executing a restore of a full VM (configured with Azure Stack managed disks), because of an Azure limitation, you can only restore the VM to the same Azure Region where the snapshot was created (the source of the snap copy used to restore the VM).

Hyper-V

You can configure a Hyper-V hypervisor to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap copy, you can restore full VMs and restore guest files and folders.

Nutanix AHV

You can configure a Nutanix AHV hypervisor to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap or backup copy, you can restore full instances and restore guest files and folders.

VMware

You can configure a VMware hypervisor to perform IntelliSnap backups. From the snap copy, you can restore full VMs, restore a disk and attach it to an existing VM, and restore guest files and folders.

Configuration

To enable IntelliSnap support, perform the following tasks:

  1. Configure storage:

  2. Add the hypervisor:

  3. Create a server plan, see Create a server plan.

  4. Associate the plan with a VM group.

    Note

For Amazon, Azure, Azure Stack, and Nutanix AHV, you must create a new VM group in SP13 or later and select the IntelliSnap option.

Result

When you enable IntelliSnap on a VM group, Commvault automatically creates the following configurations:

  • Virtual Server Agent Snap is identified as the snap engine for Amazon snapshots.

  • Schedule policies are created for the primary (snap) and backup copies.

  • The server backup plan associated with the VM group has IntelliSnap enabled and is set to retain eight snap recovery points. (You can modify the server plan to specify a different number of snaps to retain.)
