Designating Proxies to Back Up VMware Virtual Machines

When you configure a subclient, you can assign specific Virtual Server Agent (VSA) proxies to be used for backups of the virtual machines in the subclient. Assigning VSA proxies at the subclient level is useful in the following scenarios:

• The virtual machines contain large amounts of data and you need multiple streams to perform backups.

• You want to use a specific transport mode when backing up virtual machines.

When you create a virtualization client for a VMware vCenter, you can identify VSA proxies that are available for backup and restore operations with the vCenter. The list of proxies is included in the VMware instance and can be modified by editing the instance properties. By default, these proxies are used to perform backups. The first proxy on the list acts as a coordinator to distribute jobs across the available proxies for the client.

Before You Begin

• Create a virtualization client and identify proxies.

• Create a user-defined subclient and identify virtual machines for the subclient content.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Console, navigate to Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > VMware > backup_set.

2. Right-click a subclient and select Properties.

3. Click the Advanced Options tab.

4. To add proxies:

   1. Click Add.

   2. Select a proxy computer from the Exclude list and click Include.

      The Exclude list displays all computers that have the Virtual Server Agent installed.

      You can select more than one proxy from the Exclude list, and you can select different proxies from those specified for the VMware instance.

   3. Click OK.

5. Review the Client/Client Groups list.

6. To avoid using a proxy for backups with this subclient, select the client name for the proxy and click Remove.

7. Click OK.
