Getting Started with File Storage Optimization

To get started with file storage optimization, install the software, complete the File Storage Optimization setup wizard, and add data sources to analyze.

Procedure

  1. Verify that your environment meets the system requirements for File Storage Optimization.

  2. Install the Index Store package and the Index Gateway package.

These entities perform the content indexing and data analysis operations required for File Storage Optimization.

  3. Complete the guided setup for File Storage Optimization.

The guided setup guides you through creating a data classification plan, an index server, and an inventory. The inventory connects an index server with a domain such as Active Directory.

  4. Set permissions for users so that they can access File Storage Optimization.

To set permissions for a user, create an association between the Data Controller security role, the CommCell computer, and the infrastructure administrator and the data controller users. For more information, see Permissions for Activate.

  5. Add data to analyze:

    • To start analyzing data for file servers included in the inventory that you created, on the Servers tab, click Add server.

      Note

If you plan to use Entitlement Manager, when you add a file server, choose to analyze data from source data, not data that was backed up.

For information about adding file server data sources, see Adding a File Server Data Source.

    • To start analyzing data for all file servers in a server group, on the Server groups tab, click Add server group.

For information about adding server groups, see Adding a Server Group.

    • If you created projects in the Sensitive Data Governance application, the projects are listed on the File storage optimization page on the Projects tab.

  6. Analyze data using the overview dashboards.
